Poe & Stephen Fostergreenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread |
Is there any indication that Poe ever met his younger contemporary, the seminal American songwriter Stephen Collins Foster? That either man knew the other's work or expressed an opinion of it? (More likely that Foster might have known of Poe than conversely, since Foster was only about 23 when Poe died.) Any suggestions of intersections between the lives, works or influences of these 2 lyrical geniuses would be of interest.

I dont think that whether Foster knew knew Poe or not is irrelevant. None of Fosters work is influenced by Poe's writings or vice versa. Why would anyone think this? I think its because you are a loser and have nothing better to do with your time but ask dumb meaningless questions.

Now Liza that wasn't a very intelligent answer was it? Just because something is irrelevent to you doesn't make it so to others. Many people find the possibility of possible, but unlikely meetings, interesting. It fires the imagination although in this case I do think a meeting unlikely.

As I am to understand (from my study.. I believe it was in "America's Troubadour..Stephen Foster"), Stephen was a big fan of Poe's.. and on his honeymoon (w/ Jane) he visited Baltimore. One, to also meet with a Music Publisher.. two, to see the grave of Poe. It's been awhile since I read that book, but I'm quite sure that's where I saw it.
