Broiler feed recipe

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hello, I am looking for a recipe for making meat chicken feed (broilers). It has a higher amount of protein than layer mix. I can only get medicated feed from my local mill, but they can mix me up some feed if I have a recipe. Thanks Mary

We started ours on broiler feed and then swithched to turkey grower which is not medicated but has high protein. We were very pleased with the results. We raised Kosher King cockerals. They were much stronger than the Cornish Cross and had far fewer losses and no leg problems.

Thanks for asking a good question and giving a good answer! Mary, where did you get the Kosher King cockerals?

Isn't turkey feed a higher protein than broiler? I don't want them to get too big too fast. We lost some chickens that way once - their breasts got so big they had heart attacks (this is what the vet told me, honest) Mary

See if your local library or ag agent can get you a copy of Feeds and Feeding by F.B. Morrison. Dated, but still contains a wealth of information.

I have no problems feeding my broilers layer mash to begin with, I always put a couple crushed cloves of raw garlic in with their water until they are big enough to go outside w/o the heat lamp. Then I switch them to the turkey grower until I butcher. Have really had no problems this way and both feeds are non-medicated. I throw the garlic in to help avoid any coccidiosis problems when they are little, as opposed to medication.

I thought broilers needed carbohydrates. I have had a hard time finding feed with out medication. There is a brand here that does not have meds. in it it is called Golded oak. However it is hard to find. I have never heard of turky grower. No one sells it here. The Golden oak Grower has high carbs. ( I want my fryers fat ) a high protien diet would not make a fat chiken.
