heres something 4 u all to think about:what kind of person listens to REM? i met this group of people at glastonbury 99,and when i said im a MASSIVE REM fan, they were soooo shocked.they thought that just because i.....well look a wee bit "gothic" that i couldnt POSSIBLY be a fan.....i was so offended, and its been bothering me ever since.i mean, peter buck AND michael stipe were goths at one stage, but that didnt stop them from listening to B52s,am i right? please back me up here....just because a person dresses a certain way, shouldnt define their musical taste......(i feel so much better now!!)

Clothes shouldn't determine what music or what lifestyle you choose to lead, you're you are they're them and if they think that you don't look like the REM fan that they would usually see thats their problem at the end of the day

Hey ms.Stipey! I don`t think that clothes make a fan-In my opinion makes a fan what he feels in his heart for tha band(oh sorry my english is so bad-I hope you understand what I want to say).So don`t matter what other people think-everybody can be a REM fan-if he respects the band members and their music they play. So ms.Stipe the live can go on.

This is something I've been saying for years...(Or a couple of months anyway). Fasion has been linked with music since the mods and the rockers, where people wore certain types of clothes and did certain things so that they could identify with their group. This carried on into punk and now into the goth culture. It is true that certain fans of certain types of music wear certain clothes. It's also equally as true though, that people dress in a certain way because they simply like dressing that way. Some people can wear the "uniform" of a particular genre of music and never have heard any of that kind of music.I'm kind of the opposite. I listen to everythign under the sun - Hardcore punk, Folk Rock, Britrock, classical, blues - yet you wouldn't be able to tell that if I was just walking down the street. Just because I listen to Dead Kennedys doesn't mean I'm gonna start shredding my jeans and doing overt things to my hair. In the same way, just because someone happens to like wearing gothic clothes, doesn't mean they are about to start listening to Marilyn Manson and shredding their arms.
Basically, I think this is my long winded way of saying people will always judge. Why not make it difficult for them.

That could possibly be the best punk song ever written (If we forget the true genius of California Uber Alles). Sadly though, it's all too true.......esp. the rolling down the stairs :)

Wait to i tell you,you do not have to dress a certain way to like any type of music. I loved punk in the late 70's early 80's but i dressed to suit me and was frowned upon. Didn't stop me liking 'Rickys Hand'(Dead Kennedys)(i think)and i still have a collection to dream about.I revere REM and i'm a mum with 2 brats .There! I'm a dead straight person with the brain of a 21year old ,the wardrobe of the same and the bod of something in between. So discuss!!!

I gave a question like this b4! It was the true fan one. Im with you here, just because of what you wear does'nt make you a better fan or no fan at all! You should trick them...wear nothing at all! (SLAP.......the sound of gunfire at the sas man's head is heard for being a dirty pervert) Sorry.
