Does anyone know whether the overseas Districts use Bibles which are translated in the dominant indigenous tongue used by the congregants? If not, I would like to see a blue ribbon task force created which will translate the Bible in the dominant native tongue of our overseas Districts. I find it somewhat condescending that the work of spreading the Gospel as defined in Matthew 28:19-20 in these countries are limited to only English speaking and reading audiences. Some of the nations in the 14th are former French colonies while in the 18th you have ex-Portuguese colonies. This strongly suggests that potential members as well as existing, are bi or multilingual. I believe that reading/speaking proficiency in a foreign language should be a requirement for anyone seeking the overseas office of Bishop. How can one sucessfully provide effective leadership if she/he is not conversant in the language, culture and custom of the District? You do not aquire this by visiting the contry for a few weeks. If the paramount goal is maximizing church growth this will necessitate using Biblical tools which transcend our English-only experiences.

Answers

I am not aware of any AME attempts to render the Scriptures in the language of the indigenous people in overseas Districts. I believe that translation work is going on, if not by the AME Church. Endeavours on the part of organizations such as the Wycliffe Bible Translators, to name one, may be in hand. Given the innumerable tasks already calling for the Church's attention, it may be of some profit to join in with the efforts of some good parachurch groups.
