Anybody got any recommendations for a good value basic modem (56K V90). I'm buying a new one for my PC at home.

Diamond supraexpress 56k is an excellent basic modem- costs around 40 quid if u buy online from Dabs direct internet site. Internals are cheaper+easy to put in.Careful u dont buy a crap cheap make as some modems rely on software to help run it and are apparently poor. Dabs direct is well established+reliable- much cheaper than PC world etc.

Cheers Spud, unfortunatelt my home PC is only a P66 and the internals require a P166 or higher, so it may have to be an unsightly external!Dabs.comlooked a decent retailer, thanks for that link.

I agree, Diamond Supra Express is the best bet.Check out www.aria.co.uk as it is VERY cheap from here

Unless its a new build PC stick with external modems. Doddle to configure and can be easily reused/flogged when you upgrade. My Father in Law has a Diamond and its been brill.

I'm not a 'techie' DB, but if you're looking for an external modem I've had good experience with my 3-Com/US Robotics 56k(V.90) Message Modem.
I think I paid around #90 for it.

I'd always stick to an external as well....a lot less hassle....I've probably got an internal that I ripped out of my machine lying around somewhere that I'd let you have for nowt.....if only I was back in the UK anytime soon!!
Chances are that I won't be back for 4 weeks....if you can wait that long then I can drop it up to you in Northampton....

Thanks for all the info people. I plumped for an internal hardware modem, so it doesn't take up hardly any of my CPU speed. High 90's perecentage it runs itself. Decent price from a local dealer.I installed it last night after fiddling with jumper settings, then after I had got my clothes sorted out I began surfing. It is faster than the one I have at work which runs off a 233 Pentium and my one at home is only a P60. Generally pleased, only need to sort out the sound which has disappeared, can't hear from WMP on the web!
