The Lay have the responsibilities pointed out in the Bible, along with helping the local church carry out its various missions. The Lay play a critical role in dsieminating church knowledge, both doctrine and discpline (doctrine from the bible and the derived helps in that area, discipline from the AME book of discipline, which serves to govern administrative functions of the connectional body).

The Lay are the legs of the local assembly. They carry out the detailed work of the mission and charge of that assembly: evangelism, worship, praise, instruction, missionary work, facility upkeep. Many churches have additional functions performed by the lay. Perhaps we shall hear additional answers that will give you a more rounded view.
