I'm following the development of the website with great interest. In that regard, I recommend we include both direct and indirect effects of the information economy. The direct effects are those resulting from energy intensities associated with use of information and communication technologies. The indirect effects include structural change and productivity gains resulting from the use of ICT. To that extent, for example, my Jan 2000 paper should be added to selected publications as well as the EEA paper from Mar 2000 (or perhaps its update for the USAEE conference). Keep up the good work!!

A lot of the interest that ACEEE has seen generated in the area of E2P2 is now being directed towards LCA. I participated in a United Engineering Foundation seminar on this topic last year, and will be speaking on this topic at EPA Cinn. early in August. As the work of Earl Beaver has demonstrated, energy accounts for a significant portion of the environmental impacts of most manufactured products.

Life Cycle assessment is indeed an important area, and it's one where only anecdotal information is available for information technology hardware. My N4E colleagues at Carnegie Mellon and UC Berkeley have significant expertise in this area, and I encourage all those who are interested in assessing energy and environmental impacts over the total life cycle to contact Scott Matthews and Arpad Horvath.
