Componon Fungus?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Large format photography : One Thread |
I came across an 80mm/5.6 Componon in a shop on a recent business trip. It looked to be in very good condition and at $45 I thought I could use it. Closer inspection after returning home shows what may be fungus. The front and rear glass surfaces are crystal clear but when held up to a bright light an internal glas surface looks like it has a uniform coating of white speckles. It appears that the speckles are uniform across the glass. Is this fungus? Or is it dust or a degradation of the coating? The lens is an older chrome barrle version with serial numbers indicating the late 50s I think. I haven't had a chance to use it yet since my darkroom is still in the remodeling phase. Is it worth having the lens cleaned?

I guess your lens is truly a Schneider Componon. (Sorry, couldn't resist it.)

I should clarify, the marks look more like spider webs perhaps than specs. Could it be aging of the coatings or something?

I had a similar discovery looking through a 25 years old G-Claron I recently bought. If you look under "lenses" the thread "Haze in lens", you might get some useful informations. I my case, I was able to identify what I saw as "bloom" thanks to the kind contributors. If what you see is invisible when you look straight to a light source, but visible when you look to a dark surface with a light source nearby, it could well be the same phenomenon.

I couldn't find the above referenced "haze" thread. There are several past threads about lenses. Paul, could you be more specific. Or does anyone else know where to look? Thanks, njb

"Haze in lens" : last "lenses" group at bottom of page, actually 18th thread. I have not found a way to properly insert an HTML link in the dialog boxes of this forum so far. If someone could help me?

If the marks look like tiny spiderwebs, it's fungus.
-- John Hicks (jbh@magicnet.net), June 15, 2000.
Paul:I'm not sure what you mean. It is just straight HTML
< a href="http,etc" > site name < /a >
You may mean something else.

Your link is:If this is what you want, you can see page view.

Z, see, this is how it comes out when I shift the active link onto the dialog box. It just isn't an active link any more! :http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=003Bc5

Paul:You need to write out the HTML command in the dialogue box. By the way, why do you have a colon in front of the http. If you have netscape go to view and look at this thread under page source [there is a similar feature with IE. See how the link to your hazy lens thread was formed.
Best wishes,,,,

Hi Z, Kind of you to help me! This is someting I tried many times but but wasn't able to accomplish. I have Netscape and a Mac. Usually, when I want to join a link in a mail, I drag it and drop it on my page and that's it! Or I hold the mouse button down and the "insert a link" function appears. But this just doesn't work so in the dialog box of the forum. When I drop the link, it transforms to plain text! What else shall I do? Thanks! (Sorry, Dave, for the intrusive e-mails!)
-- Paul Schilliger (pschilliger@smile.ch), June 17, 2000.
Paul:Its ok. The link to your thread should be typed in as follows:
< a href="http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=003 Bc5" > Hazy Lenses < /a >
The only space should be between a and href. I have spaces between the < symbols and what follows because I am using an escape so that the < symbols will show up on the screen.
I'm using a G4/500 with netscape and IE.
Best wishes,,,,

O.K, gotcha! Will have to learn some basic HTML language. Thanks, Z.
-- Paul Schilliger (pschilliger@smile.ch), June 17, 2000.
Paul:If you haven't done this much before, there is a site on Phil's board called HTML playground. It is there for people to try these things out before driving the site administrator here nuts.
Give it a try.
It is there for that purpose. Have fun.
Best wishes,,,,

O.K, got it! (Didn't mean to be rude, just my approximate english!). Will have to learn some basic HTML language. Thanks Z.By the way, I wasn't able to find the "HTML playground" you mentioned.
