So, how did you find my page? Are you a new reader coming from the Channel 4 site? Did you find me from a link from an online journal or the Philadelphia Inquirer back in the day?
Let's see if I was able to successfully pull off that link I tried to insert above...
-- Sara Astruc (anything@fauve.cc), June 05, 2000
I think I wandered onto your page from an open pages link. or something. It was one of those late-night "I have nothing else to read, let's surf" moments. I think I'm hooked now. ;)
-- S. :0 (syi@wellesley.edu), June 05, 2000.
I know I found it from some other journal's links page, but i can't remember whose it was. yours is one of the few journals that I've read the entire archives, and i throughly enjoyed it (and continue to). so feel honored or something. :)
-- Bethany Rusen (hejira@u-town.com), June 05, 2000.
How did I find you? Quite lovely, really.
-- Jon Meyers (champ67@starpower.net), June 05, 2000.
Well, damn, Jon!Nice to know you're still out there...
-- Sara Astruc (anything@fauve.cc), June 05, 2000.
When I started to get my head out of such things as "Dogpile" (sounds weird) and started surfing I fell into journals and found you then some time in the spring of 1999. You are interesting and I still am reading. Thanks
-- Denver doug (ionoi@webtv.net), June 05, 2000.
You posted on Diary-L. I followed the link. That was back when you started Perfect Way, I've been a reader ever since
-- Nanette (nanettee@aol.com), June 05, 2000.
Hmmm - hard to remember. It was quite awhile back. I think I found you through a link from one of the New York journals that I was passing through at the time. Yours stuck, theirs didn't ;)
-- Terry (terry@surfnetusa.com), June 05, 2000.
I'm guessing how I found you is pretty standard---the links page of a now defunct journal. Ah, the heartache of a journal reader...eventually the journal writer tires of writing it or their real life heats up to the point where they no longer have time. But then there are always others to take the place of it.Thus ends my scintillating contribution to the forum.
--Mireillie
-- blanche blank (mireillie@yahoo.com), June 05, 2000.
I found you thru someone elses links page, and like many others, im now hooked. As I started reading other journals, I found that you were on *MANY* links pages :)
-- Shelley (shelleybelly@shelleybelly.diaryland.com), June 05, 2000.
stee stee stee stee stee... linked from stees.. page...
-- chug a chug a choo choo... (dennisa@onlinesupport.pe.ca), June 06, 2000.
Through Rob's forum .....about journals that others love to hate - obviously I disagreed with the author's sentiment, so am still reading (including the engrossing archives)- just wish you'd update daily!
-- margherita (dazmac@ihug.co.nz), June 06, 2000.
I don't remember exactly how I found your page, but I'm pretty sure it was a link from another journaler's page. They had mentioned "the list" and that sparked enough interest for me to visit your page. That was quite some time ago and I've been a reader ever since.
-- Frank (fisherf@navair.navy.mil), June 06, 2000.
My goodness ... the first time I found your page was eons ago ... back when The List was the focal point, and you insisted that this wasn't an online journal ... I can't remember that far back to what brought me here ... probably a link buried on someone's page ... :)
-- Alla (alla@happypuppy.com), June 06, 2000.
Actually, I'd heard of you but didn't start reading until you joined my notify list. Yes, I am that shallow.
-- The Last Girl Scout (deniseb@wwnet.net), June 06, 2000.
I found you thru Stee's journal quite some time ago. I eventually wound up going back and reading all of your archives too. Thanks for writing on a more regular basis these days. You put your faithful readers thru quite a dry spell a while back. I'm still trying to decide if I want to jump into the journalling community but for the time being until I gain a bit of courage, I'm quite content to live vicariously. Thank you for writing and sharing. -J
-- Jenn Hines (jennifer.hines@cwusa.com), June 06, 2000.
I believe I followed the link from Xeney to you in the Autumn of '99. I blew off hours at my last job reading your archives and you've been in my Fave's Folder ever since. Yea you!
-- Laura (windyis@hotmail.com), June 06, 2000.
I knew of your journal for a while but hadn't really read much till after I met you at the NY Journallers thingy. I've also lost many hours of work reading your archives. It's always nice for me to have a face in my head to go with the words I'm reading. And it certainly doesn't hurt that you send the nicest emails.
Colleen
-- Colleen (triggirl@yahoo.com), June 06, 2000.
I think I found you through Lisa's journal titled "...til human voices wake us". She had pointed to one of your Robin stories as the kind of love she wanted. When I read the Robin stories I knew that I had already survived that kind of love and was glad to have moved beyond it.As with everyone else I was hooked and had to read the archives. You have given me many hours of entertainment, some smiles, and a few tears. Thanks.
-- Sarah (hands2work@hotmail.com), June 06, 2000.
I found you through stee's left column last year.He sends you this message:
"Left column love you so much pretty lady. Why you stop loving him? Is it new boyfriend? New boyfriend keep you warm at night like left column?"
Well I, for one, doubt it but, you do what you want. Just leaves more left column for the rest of us, baby. I'm a writer, too, so I particularly enjoy your entries about your career and the things you publish professionally. That's why I kept reading. (Ok, and I got hooked on The List.)
-- Allison (lowea@phscare.org), June 06, 2000.
I found you at North Shore University Hospital.
-- Nan (NAN@LA, LA, LAND.COM), June 06, 2000.
Last year, there was lots of email from readers who thought I was secretly dating stee. I can't imagine where they got that impression ...
-- Sara Astruc (anything@fauve.cc), June 06, 2000.
I heard about FauveGrrl from my pal Jon Meyers. I got hooked on The List. Still hooked..
-- Elisabeth (egrant@fs.com), June 06, 2000.
It's been a long time, so I can't remember. Someone had a link to you, though, saying you were good. Maybe Xeney.
-- Lizzie (crow@well.com), June 06, 2000.
Wow, Elisabeth, I had no idea you know Jon!My world shrinks....
-- Sara Astruc (anything@fauve.cc), June 06, 2000.
a link from someone somewhere long ago. like several others, the list capitvated me and the entries kept me coming back for more.when my now boyfriend suffered a terribly traumatic breakup with his ex, i pointed him to the robin story as comfort. we weren't together yet. he stills reads your page. the week before you gave ben your ring, sarah, i'd given him the puzzle ring i never took off when i left for london. we're both hooked, though i think for different reasons ...
-- aggie (donkara@carleton.edu), June 06, 2000.
I think I found you throught Stee, too! However I got here, I enjoy your journal on a regular basis. Amazing archives :)
-- aimee.* (satylite2s@aol.com), June 06, 2000.
Oh, Aggie I got your lovely postcard. That was so great of you!My email failings, coming back to haunt me...
-- Sara Astruc (anything@fauve.cc), June 06, 2000.
It was so long ago... you were a link on another journaller's page and while I don't remember the details you had defended yourself about something with an admirable amount grace and strength. You always remind me of my college girlfriends and that always takes me back to some interesting days. Oh and the whole escape from NYC - I can totally relate to that, I'm doing that right now.
-k
-- krystyna (insidevelvett@usa.net), June 06, 2000.
I have no clear recollection how I first got into your journal. I know I saw you linked to all over the place for over a year, probably followed some of those links, never really got hooked, still haven't read much of anything you posted pre-Perfect Way (including The List), though I've read all of it.I know I was reading Perfect Way by the time Hurricane Floyd blew up, because I linked to your accounting of its passing your way. And I still like dubbing you "FauveBabe," though I haven't done that much anywhere public since I've still not asked whether you mind.
So, uh, do you?
-- Michael (mwalsh@lynx.neu.edu), June 06, 2000.
Luck. A lot of cool luck. Although I think it was more you found me from Gus. Which is even more luck. Well, I'm just lucky. I always have been.
-- Jim Valvis (jvalvis@hotmail.com), June 07, 2000.
I don't know how to do this whole forum thing, yet. I don't know how often I'm supposed to stick my $.02 into the discussion. So if you think I'm not posting enough, give me time! That being said, I guess my two-month dry-spell is over. I just couldn't think of a thing to say. It was tricky having Ben as a reader in the first few months of the relationship. We've been going out for six months now, so I'm getting better at juggling everything.
It's been a learning experience, this particular board. I noticed that stats are skewed highly in favor of stee. Is it just that stee readers are more vocal on the boards? Where are the readers I picked up from USENET? Are any of you left? Besides Bill, I mean.
I think I found you before the whole Gus thing, Jim, but I've been thinking about it all morning and I have no idea where it was. It was that story you were writing about the Army and that girl. It was great.
Michael: if you feel some deep pressing need to call me FauveBabe, well, be my guest. I can't guarantee that I'll answer to it, though.
-- Sara Astruc (anything@fauve.cc), June 07, 2000.
No, no, no; no deep pressing need. It was just a lighthearted gesture; I meant it amiably. I'm not that attached to it.For the other record, Sara, I found stee through your links.
-- Michael (mwalsh@lynx.neu.edu), June 07, 2000.
Ha! I knew there had to have been ONE person who found stee through me!
-- Sara Astruc (anything@fauve.cc), June 07, 2000.
i think i may have actually found stee through you too, sara, though i'm an infrequent reader of his.
and congrats on the six months. I didn't realize it had been that long. :)
-- Bethany Rusen (hejira@u-town.com), June 07, 2000.
My roomie and I were up late searching for lame erotica, you know, stuff like "The Sexiest Power Ranger." The best way to do this is to search for phrases. We searched for "sliding into me" and pulled up a Robin Altemus entry. I went to the library the next day and read the archives for three hours. Been reading ever since.
-- Lauren Clodi (floweroffire@hotmail.com), June 07, 2000.
I remember that. I don't even have to look to know exactly where on the page it appeared.
-- Sara Astruc (saraastruc@aol.com), June 07, 2000.
I think I found you through a link by Scott, of Medea Sin. He said something like "as Sara elegantly puts it...", about the process of writing &/or drawing. Like others, I devoured the archives. Also, I found Stee through YOU, when you found that word of the day: "plaintive" and linked to him:o)
-- Stella (xstella@bigfoot.com), June 07, 2000.
I think it was Open Pages or Medea Sin...something like that. It's been so long I can't remember. I do remember that I saved reading the archives/the list for one night when my house was completely empty. I was engrossed...I inspired to be like Sara at that age. So confident and beautiful. [Boys everywhere. ;)] She could write a book and I'm pretty sure it would rival with Summer Sisters as my favorite!
-- Allison (zeke@si-net.com), June 07, 2000.
I found you because we have a mutual friend in Shelleyness and she insisted that I check you out.I did.
Now I'm hooked.
-- Nance (nance@geeksandgargoyles.com), June 08, 2000.
Allison:I was many things when I was 16, but "confident" and "beautiful" didn't leap immediately to mind. I was the normal bundle of 16-year-old angst and insecurities. I remember a lot of the girls in my grade wore Levi's jeans, which featured the wearer's waist size on a leather patch. I spent hours erasing that "30" off of the back of my ass. My girfriends all had "28."
My hair was frizzy, I had freckles and slightly buck teeth, and I hadn't yet grown into my mouth or nose. When I was confident, I was faking it.
I guess it all turned out okay in the end, though. :)
I loved Summer Sisters. Judy Blume is one of my heroes.
-- Sara Astruc (saraastruc@aol.com), June 08, 2000.
Hey. I just saw you on television tonight. Ally McBeal was cool, then it was 'Who's Line is it Anyway' which the Americans have taken from us Brits and really screwed up, and then it was you. I had never really watched the show before, but the whole subject really intrested me. I wanted to check out your site cause it looked good, so was linked from the Spy TV site. I really like the site - I would like to document my life in this kind of way but its a kind of non event at the moment. I'm 16, m, living in London and a new reader. Nice to meet you. This site, for some reason, reminds me of Madonna's Sex book where she is Dita the dominatrix....ever see that?
-- Alex McCaskill (c.mccaskill@virgin.net), June 08, 2000.
I've opened a message board here for discussion of the SpyTV show, so if anyone wants to say hello, head over there.Alex: Thanks so much for stopping by We've also borrowed "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." It's been a huge success in the States.
You should start a web page. No one's life is interesting all the time. It's great fun. I have seen the Sex book, although I don't know how much good I'd do as a dominatrix!
-- Sara Astruc (saraastruc@aol.com), June 08, 2000.
I found your through another journal, that has you in her right hand column. And no, for the record, it wasn't stee. Eh..so yeah, that's it. And I'm hooked too. Oi! Such horrid writing skills I have!!
-- Alicia (darthpeanut@home.com), June 09, 2000.
I`m another convert via Spy TV. I`ve never come across a journal site before, despite using the Web for many years. I find the idea of someone laying their life on the line, or should that be on-line, facinating. I must admit that I also checked it out because your a bit of a babe!
-- Adam (adam@bravo.screaming.net), June 10, 2000.
My server has a 'site of the day'. You were IT a couple of years ago. And they don't normally show such good taste. Remember when a dozen of us sat around the vineyard restaurant, all putting a bottle of wine into the pot, betting on what you would do about Robin? I like your page. But you bring out the stereotypical Jewish mother in me. (Not easy for a Scandinavian/English male.) If I were just a hundred years younger...... LOL Glad you are so happy.
-- Stephen. (MrWolf@iinet.com.au), June 12, 2000.
I had no idea I was a "Site of the Day" for your server. I thought I picked up the bulk of my Australian readers when i got a blurb in the Financial Times over there. Huh.I remember that email where you and your friends were laying bets on the odds for Robin and me. I bet I've got it backed up, somewhere. It blew my mind to know that i was being discussed over drinks in Australia.
-- Sara Astruc (saraastruc@aol.com), June 13, 2000.
I followed a link from Jen Wade's site. [Thanks, Jen.] I'm glad I found your page; looks as if I'll have lots of catching up to do here.Channel 4? I've followed your link to them but I've still got to figure out what that's all about...
Jim
-- Jim (jimsjournal@yahoo.com), June 20, 2000.
I saw your site on Channel 4's documentary and thought I might have a look, see what updates had been posted. Anyway, I'm off to surf yuor site properly, see you later...
-- James Phelter (james@spectacularebelz2k.cjb.net), June 23, 2000.
You're charming with just the right amount New York sarcasm to make me feel comfortable! But, to answer the question - I wandered here from another journal, LIKE SANDS THROUGH THE HOURGLASS. There she mentioned that you had recently been profiled on TV and - yeah, that fact alone made me curious as to why you since there are SO many other online journals. I had to see and experince for myself what your mystery, secret was/is. Now that I'm here ... What a trea. What a joy ...happy, happy, joy, joy! I shall bring my own NYC eyes back often. Florida, huh?Kent
-- Kent Alexander (kenta@mindspring.com), June 24, 2000.
Thanks so much, Kent. I'm back to New York in the fall.
-- Sara Astruc (saraastruc@aol.com), June 24, 2000.
Open Pages i think. I went through a period of reading on-line journals about 6 - 9 months ago. Yours is the only one i've read completely and still do. And i still have that pouty feeling "i wanna be like sara". If only i could get it together enough. Thank You.Presha

Well Sara, I went looking for magic and I found it.--Thank you for sharing the magic that is you...

-- Christopher McElgunn (chris.mc@home.com), August 08, 2000.
I've been reading the same handful of journals for years. It's very rare that I start reading a new one. I'm just set in my ways.I remember hearing about you back a few years ago. Early 1998, I think. Chatting with journaller friends and they'd all mention how cool your site was and how "mysterious" it all was.
It took me awhile, but I'm glad I finally took the time to come over and get hooked.
-- Jackie (jackie@jackie.nu), August 09, 2000.
For the record, I have never joined Open Pages. My only ring affiliation is Archipelago, and I only joined two months ago. And, again, thanks to everyone for your kind words!!

I was staggering through a search on the "fabulous cushing sisters" after reading through todays obituaries and noting that another of the cushings (the brother) had died. All of which has generated very (do I say incredible) feelings of 'les temps perdue'. So, that is how I arrived at your electronic door step. And you? You appear to be one of those delightful characters that pop up occassionally (I never could spell that word). Have fun (but don't be indulgent).
