After taking a few pictures, I plug in the digital camera to my USB port and run the utility software, but it doesn't show that I have any images on the Smart Card (16MB). I just purchased this camera two days ago, and have found that the unit operates as described...I can view saved images via the LCD on the camera, I see the red light come on indicating the SmartCard is being accessed, that all works fine. My computer recognized the camera when first plugged into it, and I installed the USB drivers provided by Olympus at that time. The utility software "sees" the camera...I can pull up options about it, synch the camera's time with the PC, etc., but when I d-click on "My Camera" on the file view, it renames to "Olympus Camera" but opens a window that is blank. I'm very new to digital cameras, and Olympus' web support left me with no help. Is my new camera bad, or am I just over looking something basic? Thanks in advance! admin@stratiserv.com

I've written a lot of unkind things about problems with Camedia, none of which are exactly what you've run into, but it's pretty similar. One general problem with Camedia is that it sometimes doesn't actually look at the camera to determine whether there's anything on the card. It just "knows" there isn't so there's no point in looking. One thing to try is exiting Camedia completely, then re-starting it. Probably won't help, but it's cleared up the problem for me a couple of times.

A second thing to try is downloading all pictures to your desktop computer, then seeing if 1) anything actually gets copied, and 2) whether Camedia will recognize it there. If download works, there are lots of other packages for viewing, none of which are as bad as Camedia.

If "download all images" doesn't work, then you may have a problem with your card. Consider re-formatting it, if there's nothing on it you need.

Finally, the real solution, is to buy a card reader (around $40 for various models) and just give up on Camedia and the USB port on the camera.

If the card reader doesn't find anything, then it hasn't been Camedia causing the problem at all, but a problem with either the card or the camera. The fact that Camedia is so buggy means that even when the problem has nothing to do with it, it's very hard to debug because you don't know what you can trust and what you can't.

The answer is even easier than that!!!!

When you see the "Olympus Camera" appear, double click on it. It will then reveal 2 subdirectories. I can't remember their names, but just follow the yellow brick road (folders). Double click the first subdirectory, which will reveal another subdirectory, OLYMP or something like that.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it! I spent several days on the phone with Olympus support (not only will d-clicking on the Olympus Digital Camera name in Camedia not reveal any folders, there's not even a "plus" sign next to it) trying to resolve this. The upshot is this: Olypmus support wants me to call them if I ever figure it out and let them know how I did it! I purchased a Lexa USB card reader, and it works fine, so I am in business, just not with Camedia. Thanks again!

I love the results from my C3000Z, and share others' frustration with Camedia's USB download glitches. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and re-booting doesn't help. Luckily the Flashcard adapter still works as it does with my old C2000Z so I'm glad I didn't sell it. Strangely, USB download still works fine on my Compaq notebook, possibly cos it runs less software so has less potential for conflict. Love to know the answer to this one!

Under Red-hat 8.0 I have no problem to download all images from Olympus 3000z with Usb Cable. On the other hand with Windows 98 I can't select the camera as input device.

Cammedia 2.0 needs some extra click on the camera folder icons. Notice how the icon changes after first double click.

I have yet to find a more useless piece of software than camedia 2.0 and I will never buy from olympus again...EVER! Its insulting to not offer support for one's own product.
