took my daughters rabbit outside yesterday and he ran around like usual but when i brought him in he was bleeding. he is a little psychotic at times and wouldn't let me look at his foot but what i could tell it looked like he ripped out one of his claws. my question is would this heal by itself or would it need to be seen by the vet? this rabbit has been a terribly sore subject as it was a present 3 years ago easter and i know absolutely nothing about rabbits. the foot bled alot but i can't tell exactly what happened, there was nothing sharp it could have stepped on.

It should heal fine. If the nail bed was damaged there is always the possibility that the new nail will grow in deformed but this is rare. The bleeeding is usually minimal - more of a mess than a health problem. If it happens again you can apply styptic powder or make a paste with flour and glue. (works for dogs and cats too) Also, hydrogen peroxide is a good all purpose disinfectant for wounds of any sort if you are concerned about infection.

Sarah they should be fine. I had three rabbits who were attacked by two dogs a month or so ago. They are missing some toes now, but they healed very nicely. Sometimes I think we worry too much about our animals. Usually they do pretty good even without our help. One of the does that was attacked kindled on Easter Sunday. I was surprised she didn't lose the litter cause she was a very skittish rabbit to begin with.

Just try to make sure the wound stays clean and the bunny should be fine! We have used Benedryl creme on some of our bunnies when they would get cuts or other problems. But remember rabbits are a lot like cats in that anything you rub on them they will try to lick or rub off when they groom themselves. Does the rabbit run around in a contained area when he is outside??? Just make certain to watch him closely!

i have a rabbit who did the same thing it should heal on its own. hope this helps.=^)
