Report from the JournalUnited goals deluge sweeps away Blue Star Newcastle Reserves 4, Newcastle Blue Star 1 NEWCASTLE Reserves swept aside Northern League Blue Star with a first- half goals deluge to retain the Arnott Insurance Northumberland Senior Cup at Kingston Park last night. United crashed in four first-half goals to leave the amateurs with no hope. And Peter Weatherson's 51st-minute penalty was scant consolation for the outclassed Star, who were reduced to ten men by the 59th-minute sending-off of midfielder Shaun Beech. Paul Robinson, battling for a first-team striking role, opened the scoring on 14 minutes, weaving past two defenders to place a 15-yard shot low past goalkeeper Paul Bennett. Kevin Gall doubled the Newcastle lead nine minutes later, chipping home from 18 yards after Bennett had come outside the box to block his first shot. Robinson grabbed his second goal seven minutes before the interval, sweeping the ball in from close range after Shola Ameobi had beaten Warren Fisher on the right. But it was Stuart Elliott, back from a loan spell from Stockport County, who hit the goal of the game, crashing home a magnificent rising 35-yard drive. Among the rout, Star had only two first-half efforts at goal, both of them free-kicks from Beech which flew wide. But six minutes after the interval Weatherson was clattered by United goalkeeper Lionel Perez in the corner of the area. Perez received one of referee Mark Clattenburg's eight yellow cards, and Weatherson blasted in the spot-kick. Mr Clattenburg, from Blyth, booked three Newcastle players and four from Blue Star, and gave Beech a second yellow for a late tackle on Jamie McClen. Thereafter, Newcastle were content to let the game run down, though there was more drama as Blue Star goalkeeper Bennett dislocated his shoulder in a penalty area clash with Ameobi 19 minutes from time. Bennett was replaced in goal by former Tow Law and Gretna stopper Marc Irwin, who had only been on the field six minutes. United coach Tommy Craig said: "Considering the young team we had out, the first half was excellent. To see young boys show that kind of freshness and freedom was great. "We had killed the game off by half time with some very good goals and play, but credit to Blue Star for the way they fought back in the second half."

Humph! Still blowing a bliddy gale though, wasn't it? :-)Robinson may score against Blue Star, but I hope you noticed young Coppinger putting Hartlepool into the playoffs. There's goals in the resorves and goals in competetive games. He's doing a darned sight better than Paul Dalglish (very similar in style to Robbo) who has been converted into a winger at Norwich.
