was there indeed a pyschological problem with the main character or was he just annoyed by the cat an then since he gouged out his eye he couldn't handle looking at the cat and dealing with the guilt so he killed it. Then he went sort of crazy after killing the cat when the new cat came he thought the white around the cats neck looked like a nuse and that, that cat was taking the place of the other. At first he liked the cat but then he got very annoyed with it so he went to kill it and thats when the wife stepped in. He didn't really have pyschological problems he was just "crazy{"

I believe the narrator had grave mental problems. Although Poe always tends to tell his tales with a certain coldness, it is very clear that the narrator shows (or senses) absolutely no remorse, sympathy or sadness. I have not studied psychology myself, thus I might not be able to help, but after having read the story several times, my opinion is that the narrator is indeed insane, in some sort of self- denying-subconscious way.

Well, I think the narrator in the story became "crazy" because he had this drinking problem, and everybody knows what consequences does it give, like allucinations and all that things, and obviously it affected a lot this guy and that4s why he murdered the cat, his wife, and shutted up the other cat no? =)

Poe may be suggesting that the narrator experienced self-destructive behavior. He hurts the cat although he loves it. He also loved his wife (supposedly.) He hurts the cat, kills the cat and his wife, all simply because he loved them.

I think that the narrator was sexy and crazy, thats what I like. But I wouldn't want him to kill my cats or me. It was a very exciting to read, I would recommend it to anyone.
