Convert .RM format to AVI or Mpeg

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have a few Real Media .rm files that I want to convert to anything else so I can create a VCD CD for my DVD Player. I can't find anything at all on converting from .rm video to avi/mpeg. or anything.

i hate to tell you this, but their ARE NO CONVERTERS made to convert those highlky annoying real files to something else. I have been trying and looking, nothing exust...yet. HOWEVER i was going to try this, have you ever heard of any of those 'screen capture" programs? These are progrmsa that will take a pic (or record the video) off anything you see on your monitor. I have played atround with one last night and they work quite well. I have not yet tied the real files though, but if it works then this method will take those rm files and change them to an avi. go to www.downloads.com and then rtype in 'screen capture' for a list of free programs that do this. Hopoefully this method will work

-- doug (mazinz@aol.com), April 23, 2000.

damn it it didnt't work. maybe it was the programs i used (hypercam and snagit). Hey heres a suggestion if any of you have a video card that lets you output to some other source 9vcr,etc) then can you somehow output these real files while playiung them, record them into whatever, then send them back into your system for vcd. its possbile isnt it?

-- Doug (mazinz@aol.com), April 23, 2000.

im not fiished yet, snagit got back to me about some of the problems i had trying to capture real files and stuff played in the windows media player. They suggested shutting of the graphics hardware. I will explain more after i try it tonight and i will post it here

if u need help on this go to www.vcdhelp.com It has much to offer along the lines of vcd shit.

It seems that I've only search one solution on Internet. That is www.AnimeTools.cjb.net, however, I can't connect to the website. Will any one send a copy of the tip to me?

Thanks in advance!

How to work with RM-Fix.

1st, copy the RMFIX.EXE file to the directory where your damaged file resides. Then, go to START->Programs->MS-DOS-prompt or any other way to get to a Msdos-Box. When u are on the C:\> prompt, go to the directory wich has the damaged RM file. Execute the program like this: 'RMTEST FILENAME.EXT' Example: 'RMTEST GODDESS.RM' Be sure u use the short filename, the one with the ~ on the end. When the program loads it 1st does some initial checks on your RM file. Then u will get a menu wich will look like this:

RM-Fix v3.8b0619 (c) 2000 Magic Mysery ---------------------------------------- Main Menu --------- Information [1] * Information about the content

Tools [2] * Check all data blocks [3] * From the beginning. [4] * Up to the end. [5] * Rebuild index

[7] * Stream demuxer [9] * File cutter {Experimental}

Fixing options [E] * Timestamp fixing : OFF [N] * Stream number fixing : OFF [A] * Autofix : OFF

Misc [B] * Backup file : DOES NOT EXIST

[U] * Create undo file ? : OFF / DOES NOT EXIST

[P] * Create patch file ? : OFF / DOES NOT EXIST

[D] * Storage directory : CURRENT DIR +/- * Timestamp sensitivity A/V : 7424 / 20420 ms.

[W] * Write current configuration to file

Ok, now 1st make sure the program ALWAYS makes a backup!!! Use the 'B' to do so. Then u can enter some fixing options, usually u don't need to set them, but with extensive damage to your RM file u may have to use them. Now press '2' to let the program check the RM file. If the program finds any errors u will be prompted. Always fix the errors it finds.

*** Thanks Ripper for this very useful peace of art you made ^-^

Back to begin / Back to home Why doesn't this .avi file work? Most highly you have just tryed to play a .avi coded with DivX technologie.

Try downloading the newest DivX codec from the Archives section.

If this doesn't solve your problem.. try downloading the Mpeg4x codec, the nAVi codec and the Avi Audio codec.

If even this doesn't solve your problem if wouldn't hurt to install any other codec you can find ^-^ (it will always be usefull someday anyway). After this.. ok, try to see that the file you got could be broken or incomplete! If you know that it's a DivX file.. but incomplete and you still want to watch it go download the DivX index fixer. (he who needs those last 2 mb's? hate to resume ^-^) Back to begin / Back to home

HowTo convert your .rm .ram (RealPlayer) files into any other format.

--- v2.0 ; any comments or improvements idea's welcome!

Can we just use a small program and say: "He! convert that .rm file to .mpg!" ?? .. No, we can't, these kind of programs do not exists as far as I know.

What we are going to do is 'record' the frames of your monitor screen. The first convert will take as long as the movie needs to play.. (if you got an episode of 22min, the recording will take 22min).

What do we need:

A fast CPU (400+ Mhz I think)

HyperCam Capture program. (Download incl. key)

RealPlayer (Archives)

A .rm realplayer file (or .ram) .. he, look for that yourself ok? ^-^

Some time off course!

First of all:

Be sure to turn off the Video Hardware Acceleration in windows!

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Performance > Graphics :

(if you have good eyes you'll be able to even see where to go when it's this small, but to enlarge it please click on it. I had to make it small because of low resolutions would kill the design)

Ok, after you set this option you will have to reboot your computer first!

Now we start up HyperCam and RealPlayer and .. follow me here: ^-^

Press the 'Select Window' button in HyperCam and go put it around the screen in RealPlayer where the movie plays and click. Now the coordinates will be ok (don't move the RealPlayer tho because than off course the X and Y will be off ^-^). (BE SURE that you put the realplayer not in ZOOM mode like 2x.. just keep it at 1x (original size))

Ok, Hotkeys.. well you can figure that out if you want to use them.. :) ; AVI File tab, let's look over there:

AVI File Name: just put in some name and path on how you want to save the record.

Rate in Frames per Second, Record: ?? Playback: ?? ::: be sure the are both the same otherwise the sound record won't work! I had it on 15 and it was pretty good.. you can try to get higher but it may complain, play around with it a bit.

Video Compressor: Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V3 <-- directly recording/saving it into DiVX! sweet eh? you can use any compressor you have and off course after that you can always use some program to convert it again in to something else.

The Sound Tab:

Size on 16Bit? Rate at 22050? .. decide on your own what you like best.

Other Options Tab:

Not really much to explain here is there? :)

License Tab:

This is where you can enter the Registration code ^-^

!WARNING!

If you use Uncompressed Avi compressor (Full Frames Uncompressed) be sure to look out for your disk space! a few seconds can be over 50mb.. :-)

Ok, so now start the RM and start the recording, when it's done you'll have an avi file waiting at the place where you decided to save it, have fun!! (ohh BTW, don't forget to turn on the Video Hardware Acceleration again!)

Update/New information:

Since I received tons of e-mail from people who are having trouble and I keep typing the same reply every time.. I think it's time for a small update here:

Help me please! I got video but no sound!!

(For those who messed with some settings start off with checking under the Sound option in HyperCam, the option box for Record Sound must be checked.)

The problem is that most computers are configured to record from the microphone or not at all. Do you see that little yellow speaker icon in your system tray at the bottom right of your screen?? start it up! This will open your 'Play Control' window. it'll look a bit like this:

I might have a bit less options.. (I got a SB Live soundcard) but don't worry about that.

When you open the Play Control, be sure to view all the options available, go to

Options > Properties and for both 'Playback' and 'Recording' at the 'Show the following volume controls' you enable them all. It has no use in copying the options I set on the picture above because that probably won't work either :)

Now.. you do see some interesting settings right? like at my screenshot 'What U Hear' Balance.. select to enable or mute to disable (some windows version uses select and others use mute, very confusing most of the time). You might see some other settings you want to try to enable, disable or turn up the volume.. try out different settings and I am sure that you will get the sound recording to work.

* Tip from Andrew Whitemore who also had the sound problem:

yeh i got it fixed eventually, i had to alter my sound settings in the 'volume control' panel. specifically i had to set the recording selection to 'mixed output'.

I got sound.. but no video! or just the first frame! (or running Win2000) Remember when I told you about disable the Hardware acceleration?

Sometimes it doesn't really work that well and in Windows2000 this can't be done normally. If you got problems with recording video first change this setting:

Start your RealPlayer and go to View > Preferences > Performance tab, now at the bottom right you'll see a option called 'Use Optimized Video Display'; Turn if OFF :)

This will solve probably most of the problems.

it says that i have to choose the Microsoft mpeg-4 video codec v3.. but that option doesn't exist in my version. I don't remember saying that you would HAVE to choose that option, I just suggested it because DivX is the most used codec to convert with. You could use some other codec.. if you do want to make a DivX file but you don't see the codec in the list, make sure you installed the DivX codec. (if not, download it from the Archive)

If you still got questions or problems, feel free to e-mail me!

DivX Guide DivX is based on the MPEG-4 compression format. MPEG-4 is a new standard of video compression that is both high quality and low bitrate. They are usually only a fraction (around 15%) of the size of a standard DVD, even at 640x480 resolutions, making them the best home video format thus far. They only take half the time to encode, and yet at the same time is smaller in size than MPEG-1 - due to their incredible compression technology - some have even called MPEG- 4 the "MP3 of the video world". Quality ranges from net-streaming quality to DVD and better!. Currently, DivX is playable on computers only, not on DVD players or MPEG cards.

Back to begin / Back to home

DVD Guide DVD is a storage medium which enables storage capacities ranging from a single-sided, single-layer DVD disc at 4.7 GB to a double-sided, double-layer DVD disc at 17 GB. There are five types of high-capacity DVD discs, each targeting their individual industry. DVD-Video and DVD-ROM target the entertainment industry enabling the interactive playback of full length movies and graphic-intensive computer games. DVD-R and DVD-RAM target the computer industry enabling "write once, read many" and "rewritable" formats. DVD-Audio targets the music industry enabling a vast amount of high-quality audio content on one DVD-Audio disc.

DVD format became standardized, the movie industry decided to split the world into six distinct regions, which are:

USA, Canada. Europe, Near East, South Africa, Japan. South East Asia. Australia, Middle & South America. Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe. People's Republic of China. The region code itself can reside in several locations :

The DVD disc (commonly written on the back side of the DVD casing). The DVD hardware device. Software decoders (such as PowerDVD or WinDVD) or hardware decoders (such as REALMagic Hollywood-Plus or DXR3). The DVD Consortium has decided that by the year 2000 all sold DVD Drives should come Region-Locked (RPC2 firmware) which enforces a Region setting within the drive on a hardware basis. It means that when you insert a region-specific disc into the drive, the drive checks weather the disc's region matches the region currently set within the drive itself! This is done completely within the drive, there is no way for a software based region selector (such as DVD Genie or Remote Selector) to bypass this internal region check. you will be allowed up to 4 changes before the drive will be permanently locked in the last selected region, on the otherhand the Region-Free (RPC1 firmware) which doesn't allow for checking the Region code but the decoders try to enforce the region protection on their end.

To playback, the disc itself must set to a specific region code (which most discs are), and then either the disc reader (the DVD drive) or the playback software must match the disc's code to their own code for playback to work. If the drive itself is locked, the software or hardware decoder will rely on the drive to confirm the region match.

To do when your drive is locked :

With a firmware update. Firmwares are unique for each drive model and there will never be a global fix. Hardwares (cards). Certain hardware decoders store their region code on the card itself and to bypass this protection you either need hacked drivers or a program to intercept the region queries. Softwares. Certain software decoders keep their region code hidden within the system registry, but with the right tools you can quickly bypass this. Notes : All DVD drives that slower than 5x are region-free (RPC1 firmware) while 5x and faster may have region locked (RPC2 firmware). You can get dvd region utilities that available at : MPEGX Video > DVD Region Utiliy Back to begin / Back to home

VideoCD Guide VCD (VideoCD) is a CD format that was introduced by Philips, JVC and Sony in 1993. It's practically unheard of in North America and Europe, but very popular in Asia. China alone produces 2 million VCD players annually. It's basically a predecessor of the new DVD format: while VCD quality is roughly comparable to VHS tapes (sometimes better, sometimes worse), DVD quality is comparable to laser disc or better. Video CD 2.0 can store video sequences and high quality stereo sound in up to 98 A/V tracks. An A/V track contains play items which can be video, audio, or (up to 2,000) still images with or without audio. Video CD is designed to store digital video sequences in the MPEG-1 format. MPEG (Motion Picture Expert Group), which has defined the current compression method for digital video. Due to the high compression of the video data, it is possible to record just over 70 minutes of full-screen video and high-quality audio on a CD. In a two disc set, you can have 2 hours and 24 minutes of video, (74 min. per disc on each CD-R) including 16 bit stereo audio. 2 minutes per disc are required for the overhead for interactive control. With the introduction of affordable CD-ROM burners (CD-R/RW), there's also significant interest in being able to make your own Video CDs. For example, to archive home movies.

SVCD (Super Video CD) is an extension of the VCD standard which uses MPEG-2 compression with Variable Bit Rate encoding which means the quality is better than VCD but under DVD. Although it also means need more spaces for same the movie length. A SVCD can store 35 to 80 minutes of VCD. SVD supports both PAL and NTSC standards.

XVCD is almost the same as VCD but with higher bitrate(up to 3.5 MBit/s). A XVCD can be played on many DVD Players and on all CD-ROMs.

DVCD (Double VCD) has the same bitrate/resolution and features as VCD but the length is anywhere from 90-100 min. Playable on DVD and VCD players but may be incompatible with CD-ROM players.

The Various Ways To Rip A DVD I am going to discuss the many ways to rip a DVD, to various formats such as DivX MPEG1 (for VCD) and MPEG2 (for SVCD).If you wish to rip to either true mpeg form thats not for those exact purposes then you can ignore the bit rate info and it should work just the same. This document assumes that you have a computer, a DVD-ROM, some DVDs to rip (hopefully Anime), something to grub on, something to drink, a straightjacket, and an allot of patience.

DivX First I will go through how to rip to DivX (somewhat shitty format for DVDs IMO). for this you will need the following, a CSS descrambler (VobDec, DeCSS, SmartRipper etc), FlaskMPEG.

First we need to remove the CSS thats keeping us from ripping our DVD, so use your tool of choice and do it already!

Next we will need to decide what to rip, so fire up FlaskMPEG and go to file -> open DVD. Open the IFO of the episode / movie you wish to rip, and pick what audio and subtitle tracks you want (better get japanese audio with english subs or I will have to kill you :P), then click Flask it!

Now we need tos et a few options, so go to, get this, options, make sure the select output format is AVI output, then go up to Output Format Options.

select your video codec (DivX low-motion) but before you click ok click on configure. set your bit rate (1000 to 1500 is good), Key frame every 10 seconds, Compression Control should be 100, then click ok then ok. For audio you will probably want Mpeg Layer III at 128k, do that then click ok till your back at the main Flask window. Now on to Global Project Options, under video pick your resolution (I usually do DivX at 320x240), your FPS shouldn't need touching, it auto detects it, and for the love of god deinterlace that damn encode. Under audio check the Decode Audio option, the sample rate shouldn't need to be touched. Post Processing make sure No Crop, No Letterboxing, and Keep Aspect Ratio are checked. Files you can figure out yourself, and General should be ok. all should be well so get back to the main window by clicking ok as many times as needed, then go to Run -> Start Conversion.

Get that food and drink, maybe even the straightjacket, cuz this is gonna take awhile. Now wait some more, and wait even longer. Hmm whats this? ohh its done, ok fire up your media player of choice and watch your new encode. Looks like shit you say? You screwed it up :P Well thats about all for today people, so get to rippin, the MPEG1 and 2 sections should be here shortly.

the only problem with the online community is that there are people in it

ASF Advanced Streaming Format is a video format that supports streaming by Microsoft. Very good quality for its 'small' size. Back to begin / Back to home

AVI Audio Video Interleave is the video format most commonly used on Windows PC's. It defines how video and audio are attached to each other, without specifying a codec. Back to begin / Back to home

BIN is an image from a CD. Great for distributing a VCD on the web. BIN is the main file to create VCD by burning it to CD-R(W) with a burn program. Back to begin / Back to home

COder/DECoder is a codec is a piece of software that allows you to encode something - usually audio or video - to a specific format and can decode media encoded in this specific format again. Popular Codecs: MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG-4, Indeo, etc. AVI, ASF, etc is not a codec but a format - that can be encoded using different codecs. Back to begin / Back to home

DAT is the file that you see on the VCD. The DAT doesn't differs much from a MPG but you should always convert the DAT to MPG to edit or so. Back to begin / Back to home

Demultiplexing is the opposite of multiplexing. In this process a combined audio/video stream will be separated into the number of streams it consists of (a video stream, at least one audio stream and a navigational stream). Every VOB encoder demultiplexes the VOB files before encoding and every DVD player does the same (audio and video are being treated by different circuits, or decoded by different filters on a pc). Back to begin / Back to home

Digital Video is usually compressed since it'd take Terabytes - thousands of Gigabytes or for the mathematicians among you : 10^12 Bytes) to store a movie uncompressed. Since standard loss less compression is insufficient for video, the video codecs have to get rid of unimportant information - stuff the human eye won't see or is unlikely to see. Since that is still not enough modern compression algorithms use keyframes, I and P frames in order to save space. Back to begin / Back to home

Firmware is a controller software which resides on a programmable chip within the drive itself (DVD/CD/Hard Drives). It's upgradable through Firmware Patch such as BIOS at PCs. Back to begin / Back to home

miniDVD basically is a DVD on a CD-R(W). Back to begin / Back to home

MPEG which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, is the name of familly of standards (joint of the International Organization for Standardization [ISO]) used for coding audio and video data in a digital compressed format including data transmission across digital networks. MPEG Video files have the .mpg or .dat extension and MPEG Audio files generally have the extension .mp1, .mp2, .mp3. MPEG is cross-platform compatible and can be played on all popular computer systems. The major advantage of MPEG compared to other video and audio coding formats is that MPEG files are much smaller for the same quality (eg, mp3 size is about 1:10 compared to Audio CD). This is because MPEG uses very sophisticated compression techniques. Back to begin / Back to home

MPEG2 is a standard for compressed video that are used in SVCDs and DVDs. Back to begin / Back to home

RM Real Media uses Real Player by RealNetworks for playback. The worst video quality but very small files. Back to begin / Back to home

VOB All DVD movies are stored in so-called vob files. Vob files usually contain multiplexed Dolby Digital Audio and Mpeg2 video. Vob Files are called as follows: vts_XX_y.vob where XX represents the title and Y the part of the title. There can be 99 titles and 10 parts, although vts_XX_0.vob does never contain any video, usually just menu or navigational information. Back to begin / Back to home

Windows Media is a Microsoft's proprietary architecture for audio and video on the pc. It's based on a collection of codecs which can be used by the WindowsMedia Player to play files encoded in any supported format. The current release of the Windows Media Player is version 7.0. WindowsMedia 7.0 offers a new set of codecs, among them a fully ISO compliant MPEG4 codec (called MS Windows Video V1), an improved MPEG- 4 codec called MS Video V7, an encoder that supports Deinterlacing and Inverse Telecine. Download Anime episodes and movies

I do not have the resources to supply you all with direct fast downloads from this web page, but.. where does this all start? iRC!

iRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, it's the first kind of chat that was ever invented on the Internet. An allot of groups/subbers/rippers/leechers join iRC networks and Channels to chat / download etc' there favorite Anime and Manga.

- Ok Ok, now just tell me how to get there and I'll figure the rest out myself! (great ^_^)

Download a iRC client (MiRC)

Install the client, fill in your Full Name and E-Mail address (yes, of course you may lie and stay anonymous!)

Do not worry about the iRC server thingies...

Fill in your nickname and alternative (incase your nick has been taken allready)

Move to the Ident tab and do 'Enable Ident Server', User ID = nickname?, System=UNIX (thought I do.. doesn't really matter at all), Port= 113 (standard, don't need to change).

Ok, now click on Ok and you'll come in a little Window again. Now type ' /server irc.dal.net ' irc.dal.net is the server, if it doesn't work you can try other DalNet servers like irc.dalnet.com / ced.dal.net / tsunami.dal.net.

Once you are connected use ' /join #AnimeMPEG ' to join one of the Anime channels located on the DalNet iRC Network. If you get a error about your nickname or something you will need to REGISTER your nickname, this way others can't use it. if it's already registered you'll notice as well, change your nickname. Type ' /nickserv help ' for more information.

Once registered and Identified you will be able to join most channels like #AnimeMPEG.

Ok, READ the RULES, STICK TO THE RULES, and STAY POLITE .. and nothing bad will happen ^__^

try typing ' !list ' once for some fun and further more chat and ask / help others downloading / trading Anime / Manga.

I know this is a bit hard to understand but you'll find it very easy in just a few min for sure, if you do not know what the f*ck I am talking about and you are not that good with computers AT ALL, well in that case don't start on hard things and walk to the store to buy Anime and Manga.

Maybe I'll update this later but I don't think I really need to yet.

If you really don't want to give up and are willing to learn this and you still got a problem or questions, feel free to E-Mail me.

There is 1 way got to http://evc.to/tinra/ it is a realmedia to avi enocoder but there is a 2gig file size limit so the limit it reached fast in some cases I have used it and it works okay for a free encoder but it is best for the movie to be small size wise and not to lenghty I create anime music videos for fly high studios and another thing is if u want to convert realmedia to mpeg first conert realmedia to avi then find a avi to mpeg encoder and trust me their are bunches and some free ones work just as good as xing or something so look into it

Hello, I'm not sure if anyone else in all those posts mentioned this site, but clear up there where someone said there is no converter for .rm files to regular files like .avi or .mpeg that person is wrong... Check out this site:

I've kinda been wondering whether or not u all are idiots or what. you have already mentioned www.vcdhelp.com, but you never mentioned all the converter programs they have there. Goto http://www.vcdhelp.com/rmto3.htm to download EO Video. It's this great program where you can convert pretty much anything to anything. You can convert Real Files to like MPegs or AVI. You can even split the files if your trying to put them onto VCDs or you can join split files. There is no size limit, you may have to play around with it a bit if you want like really good resolutions and stuff. But it's basically self explanitory. I mean when it first pops up (which is the only place where it doesn't tell you what to do) that is whereyou add all the files to convert, join, or split. If you ever need any help with it just E-Mail me. I will respond.

-- Nathan Cox (Alexstarfire@hotmail.com), July 25, 2002.

One thing I forgot to mention is that if you try to set the video resolution higher than it supposed to be when you convert it will take like less than 5 min and doesn't do anything. So don't think that you can make the resolution higher when you convert, it doesn't work. Just thought I'd mention that before some stupid person would say "Hey I can't make the resolution higher on my crappy Real Files when I convert them to AVI."

I have had the same problem!! There is a programe called Super RM Converter (Another Freebie) but it will not let you select an outgoing path\file, Maybe there is a burner programe that will burn them as a watchable file to CD ???

I Live in hope!!!!!!

Look no further Ladies and Gentlemen. After many hours of toil and fustration I have found the way you can convert your RM files into a VCD format for playing on your home DVD player, and not only that, even though I mistakingly spent some money in vein (about$40.00) this solution I bring you is free. Come on!! Come on!! I hear you say....Lets have the goods.

You first need to download a free trial programe called SUPER DVD CREATOR. Use the open Tab within the programe and browse to your RM folder, highlight the RM's you want to convert then click the TARGET tab and select a folder and format you wish to transfer and it does the business with very little loss in quantity or quality. I KNOW IT WORKS BECAUSE I TESTED IT BEFORE REPORTING MY FINDINGS!! I wish you luck and would love to hear about how you all got on. I now have to go shrink my head some. Later Guy's and GOOD LUCK! John.

Sorry for my German answer, here is my solution to handle these naughty RM-files:) Hope it helps a little...
