What happened to J.C. Penny to cause their stock to drop for 1 1/2 years.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

I have been looking for an affordable stock to buy under $13.00 per share. I came across J.C. Penny and was astounded to find their stock so low. I paddled through the internet trying to find out what happened to them in 1998 which caused their stock to take a continuous dive. I found news about the company but not what I was looking for. Anybody have a clue?

Why in the world would you want to buy ANY stock right now?

" J.C. Penney operates in retail department stores and catalog, drugstores, and insurance. JCP markets family apparel, shoes, home furnishings, jewelry, and offers credit cards. For the 39 weeks ended 10/30/99, revenues rose 7% to $22.86 billion. Net income applicable to Common fell 11% to $321 million. Revenues reflect the inclusion of the sales of Genovese drugstore and higher direct marketing revenue. Earnings were offset by increased S/G/A expenses and lower margin.

Recent Earnings Announcement

For the 13 weeks ended 01/29/2000, revenues were 9,834,000; after tax earnings were -12,000. (Preliminary; reported in thousands of dollars.)"

JC Penney's business model is flawed. Specialty retailers have been killing general department stores like Penney, Monkey Ward and Sears for years.

Not sure but, JC Penney gave me my first credit card when no one else would, so I am a loyal customer. I will do my shopping there first, if I can.

JC Penny is toast. WalMart and Target kicked their ass a long time ago.

Hawk, how do those wal-mart clothes fit ya? And have you patched that hole in the roof of your trailer yet? You'd better hurry, I smell rain. {giggle}=)

This is my story about Penneys, and I am sticking to it. Although this is going to open up a whole new can of worms for "Urban Myths". I carried a Penneys credit card from back in the 70's, with balance, sans. Penneys used to carry washable clothing, I am fine with this. I watch a buck. What is the use to watch for sales, only to pay for the garment ten fold with dry cleaner charges? ( Not to mention the questionable chemicals?). Slowly, Penneys quit carrying "washables", every label demanded "Dry Cleaning". I wrote a protest letter to Penneys back in 86 or something. They wrote nothing back, they continued their line of "Dry Cleaning Only", hence I paid off my bill, and since, I have not owed Penneys, one penny. I get my "washables" from another source.

Cin, why don't you shut the fuck up and go back under the rock from where you came? You are an arrogant piece of flesh, I wish a POX upon you for posting unkind words. Maybe you will get hives under your arm pits, while you sleep. May the hives burn and itch you, beyond human belief.

-- Justice (forme@last.com), April 21, 2000.

cin, I don't buy clothes at WalMart. JCPenny, WalMart, and Target are stores where most people buy things like car batteries, light bulbs, and garden tools. If you buy your clothes at JCPenny then you've got a lot worse problems than I thought. This is a girl who thinks she would look good in a Porsche? Yeah right, with your JCPenny polyester suit! LOL!!

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), April 21, 2000.

BTW cin, I think what "Justice" just wrote was a very appropriate response to your snot-nosed, stuck-up bitch remark that you just said to me, totally unprovoked.

I don't know what your problem is, but you're a first-class fucking bitch, and I'm not suprised that you're sitting home alone with your computer taking your frustrations out on others. Stupid worthless cunt!

Thanks Justice, for standing up for what is right, unlike most of the worthless fucking trolls like cin who only defend what is wrong about this forum. :-)

gawd...the freaks are out in force tonight.

Hawk, can't you take a fricken joke? You really need medication or something.

p.s. Hawk,

Anger management therapy - highly recommended.

That's where you're wrong bimbo bitch. It is healthy to release your anger when you are offended. People like you that hold it inside end up doing sick things like calling people trailer trash in the middle of an otherwise normal conversation. Don't try to pass it off as a joke, you're twisted.

-- hawk (flyin@high.again), April 22, 2000.

you are certifiable. a raving lunatic

Hey Hawk: I'm here a little late, but if a nitwit such as Cinloo would constantly come to the side of Laura (ladyLogic) in spite of Lady's continual disrespect and diatribe of others, it makes perfect sense for her atrocities to the intellectual exchanges occurring here on this forum. These women are so beat up from life due to their "misguided" beliefs in equality and justice that they will never make it back into the mainstream of reality let alone life.

I hear ya RJS, she's a sicko alright. Thinking back over all the threads I've read on this forum for the last 2 years, I cannot recall a single one where cinloooo actually said anything about the topic of the thread. She always just nags and nags, like the annoying little bitch that she is. Just a female troll, even worse than LL used to be.

-- Hawk (flyin@high.again), April 22, 2000.

Wow I've REALLY offended Hawk. Maybe he DOES live in a leaky trailer and shop for clothes at walmart. woops sowwy

-- cin (cinlooo@aol.corn), April 22, 2000.

Hawk: Cinloo saw the attention, although negative, that LL received through her constant attack of other individuals. It seems that her life is as lonely as LL's, if not emptier, so she decided to get "on board" that train to gain some type of attention. You are right, just as LL, cinloo rarely addresses the issue(s). She spends most, if not all the time, slinging sh*t in order to revisit the responses we other folks give. I guess we "feed this beast", but it still doesn't excuse the abhorrant (sp?) behavior exhibited by these two females. RJS

I would agree partially with Hawk that Penny lost a portion of the pie to Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc., along with Sears and Montgomery Ward. However, I would NOT agree that the clothing offered at Penny is necessarily at the same level of quality as those stores. Unlike Walmart, Kmart, Target, Sears, and Montgomery Wards, Penny carries brand-name clothing as well as their own brand. I've seen SOME brand- names in the other stores, but I don't see their business relying on it as much as Penny.

Probably out of the realm of Hawk's immediate experience, but my girls enjoy poking around for new underwear styles at Victoria's Secret. We go there first. Once they've decided what style pleases them, we compare the price at VS with the price for virtually an identical item at Penny. When looking for dresses for my mom, I check ALL the stores. Last year I found the identical dress I thought she'd like at Penny for $20.00 less than Dillard.

Quality doesn't seem to be based on the store name anymore. Marshall Field's was once considered to be THE high-quality store [at least in the Midwest]. They're now purchasing some of the same junk that many lower scale stores have carried all along. No matter WHERE you shop, it's important to be able to recognize quality in individual items. Higher quality shops carry those polyester suits as well, Hawk. They may not carry as MANY as Sears, but they don't want to lose the business of those folks who never got over polyester.

Regarding Penny's stock and how it may fare in the future, I would THINK [although I'm not sure] that catalog sales were one thing that kept Sears, Penny, and Montgomery Ward in the running longer than perhaps their quality deserved. Specialty stores of course got in the running in the catalog area, and internet shopping has certainly become more popular in recent years. These additional options for "home" shopping could very well affect their market value.
