Where are you living?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am just thrilled to be able to hear what everyone has to say on this forum. I am also curious to know where everyone is living. I know that Don is in Australia, and a few of you are in Canada, but it seems most folk are in the United States.

I think it would be interesting to post where we are...doesn't have to be specific. I personally am interested in geography of say, east of the Mississippi, or New England or Great Plains or S. California, or of about that generality. I would love to know where in OZ Don lives, too. But tell us whatever you wish. So I'll go first, and hopefully some of you will follow... thank you.

I am new to this forum and have been a subscriber to Countryside for a few years. I live on an island off the midcoast of Maine. It is very beautiful here but this area is becoming more and more of a "tourist trap". Lobsters and tourism are our biggest industries here. As a matter of fact, my husband is a lobsterfisherman. The climate isn't too bad unless we have a lot of fog in the summer which does happen on occasion. Today is cool though, only 40 degrees but sunny. I've been sticking the pins in (can't make it permanent, though -- it's my Rand McNally!) and so far the bulk of them are in the mid- west, with a few in New England, the Rocky Mountain states, and the far West. Amazing, to have people so far apart be able to communicate so quickly, and help each other with such "old-fashioned" type things!

-- Kathleen Sanderson (stonycft@worldpath.net), April 17, 2000.

Thanks you guys. This is so cool for me! I don't know a lot of the places back east, but I do know some out here. I love the high Oregon Desert...I have gone birding at Malheur Lake on many occasions (even stayed at the Field Station..yup cold!!!); plus love the Alvord Desert, Steens and Hart Mountains, etc. And yes, I also love s. Oregon, down around Ashland, and Grass Pants (Grant's Pass). And it looks like I will have fun thinking of my new buddy on the way to the North Rim in AZ!! Jacob's Lake??? To Jan B...don't know your area too well, but I am going to Estes Park this summer and I will look out from 14,000 feet on a hike and see if I can see your house!! To Shaun....the best abalone I ever had came from down your way! And to Doris in Idaho...Ah Lewiston!!! I was conceived in the old Lewis and Clark Hotel!!!

So just babbling on here, but this is great. I can't see your faces, but I can just think about you all and hold an impression in my heart. Thanks!! For the rest of you, I will get out my Atlas, and start studying! Maybe throw in some history, too, since it keeps coming up in the politics threads. Bless you all.

Well, folks, the pins are still thickest in the mid-west, though a few more from peripherel areas have checked in. The south-east and the Great Plains are barely represented, though. Wish I could figure out a way to post the map on here so you all could see, but if you have time, you can do the map thing yourselves, if you want!

-- Kathleen Sanderson (stonycft@worldpath.net), April 18, 2000.

I llve in Thomas Jefferson country, near Charlottesville, Virginia -- kind of mid-way between Colleen and Joel Rosen! I have land in Orange, VA, right where three counties (Greene, Orange, and Albemarle) come together, when I am trying to establish a homestead and have bees and a big garden but no home as of yet.

I have been a regular poster on BWH (Backwoods Home Forum) since last summer and one of our regulars there suggested sometime ago that we put our state after our name in our posts. Most of the regulars do that and I love it when people do that! It's really marvelous to me to be communicating with people all over the country, but I pay special attention to people who might be near me, especially if they seem to share main interests with me! Also, we have some people with the same name, and it's nice when they differentiate by adding their state to the post. Why not do it here? I just started, see above!

Kathleen, you are the best! What a project. I can see you now, like in a war room with a big room sized map and a pointer...keeping the pulse on the Countryside forum member distribution! Thanks for the recap...wonder why we are so sparse out here in the west? It's not exactly urban everywhere!! Maybe less homesteaders and more big ranchers or farmers? Or ??? I am clueless, as usual, and soon to be late to school if I don't push myself away from this...

-- sheepish (rborgo@gte.net), April 20, 2000.

Hi! I'm using a friends e address as I don't have one as yet. I'm a Hoosier with 8+ acres in Knightstown, IN. I have a start on my homestead, hope to be a self-sufficient old lady when I retire. Now I have minature Belfair cattle, sheep, chickens and rabbits. Plus, raising two of my grandchildren. As you can see, I'm in the mid- west. Have been a Countryside subscriber for a number of years and look forward to receiving my magazine with all of its ideas and information. I am definitely still in the learning stages, but I love it here in the country! Drop me a line, if you like.

-- phyllis warman (KKPierce@netdirect.net), April 20, 2000.

My husband and I were wondering also, why so sparse in the west -- maybe fewer people with computers? or possibly Coutryside Mag. is more pertinent to people in similar climates to where it's published? Any other ideas?

Kathleen,

I think everyone out west has as many computers. Between California, with the Silicon Valley, and Microsoft, Intel, Amazon.com, Nintendo, Boeing, etc. up here, everyone seems to have at least one...not to mention the toys: palm pilots, etc. Maybe it's that old cowboy spirit...going it alone? I know a lot of folks have never heard of Countryside Magazine, that I talk to. Maybe that's it. Guess we'll have to fix that somehow!

-- sheepish (rborgo@gte.net), April 20, 2000.

I'm new here, my hubby & I have read Country Side magazine for quite a while. We live in the heart of the flint hills of Kansas. Cattle country!!! We live in a very & very small town in the middle of no where & we love it! We have many, many lots in town, with an 11,000 sq. ft. ware house, three orchards, our oldier remodeled home, a guest house & a barn. We have chickens, & new baby geese & ducks. We are both farm raised--lived in the city for years & are back in a rural setting & hubby commutes 75 miles to work each day. Kids are raised & we now have gradbabies. Working toward our retirement & being pretty much self sufficient out here. I'm really enjoying reading the questions on this forum, & now learning where everyone calls home. Sonda Bruce

We live in southwest Louisiana. Closest towns on the map is DeRidder about 23 miles northwest and Lake Charles about 45 miles southwest. We have 80 acres and raise just about everything.

Another lurker, but I couldn't resist!!! So few Canadians speaking up!!! We're in Saskatchewan, right smack dab in the middle of the Canadian prairie!

-- Tracy (trimmer@westzone.com), April 22, 2000.

Kathleen: Another pin for you. I am in the north-west corner of Montana about 30 miles cross county from the Canadian border. On your map the town I would be closest to is called Troy.

-- Marci (ajourend@libby.org), April 22, 2000.

Tracy: I love Saskatchewan!! My husband & I spent a lot of time in your province 2 years ago - open spaces, friendly people, small towns... We currently live in Victoria BC and are hoping to relocate to ?? interior of BC or possibly Sask. if we could handle the cold winters. Realestate here is one of the third highest in Canada but the climate is ideal and I do like being near the ocean. If we lived elsewhere, it would have to be near a lake. Heather

-- Heather (heather@bolen.bc.ca), April 22, 2000.

Heather -- A little known fact is that Saskatchewan has more lakes than any of the other Canadian provinces. Northern Saskatchewan is wild, woolly, full of trees full of birds and lakes full of fish!

There are a lot of small acreages coming on the market here -- I think a lot of "wannabes" made rash decisions based on the Y2K thing - - and are now having second thoughts.

There is a great rural property site called www.lanerealtycorp.com. They advertise rural properties/farms/ranches, etc in SK, AB, and MB - - mostly SK. If you're thinking of relocating, this might be a place to start. My in-laws have property in the Kootenays -- we've been out there a couple times -- beautiful but expensive!!!

-- Tracy (trimmer@westzone.com), April 22, 2000.

Put another pin in for central NH.I'm a lurker and subscribe to BHM and love it.I love hearing about where everybody lives inthe USA

-- hdwells (hdwells@gis.nwt), April 22, 2000.

I'm in beautiful upstate New York; rolling hills, four seasons, still lots of small farms around. It's a great place to live. (Broome County)

-- Catherine Horn (hrnofplnty@webtv.net), April 22, 2000.

Heather, move to the Okanagan in BC! Great climate! We have property in the US Okanogan (notice spelling with second "o"). We love it...have gone camping in BC a lot...love our neighbors to the north.

-- sheepish (rborgo@gte.net), April 22, 2000.

I think I've got all you beat for obscure location, Im typing this from Keflavik, Iceland. (shrug) It wasnt my idea to come here, Uncle Sam sent me for 24 months. My off-grid home that Im building is in southcentral Alaska though, near Willow.

-- Dave Harrison (davidh@mwr.is), April 23, 2000.

David -- WOW, Iceland. One of my lifelong dreams has been to see Iceland. What kind of growing season do you have there???

Since the lurkers are coming out.....Put a pin Up North in Minnesota, about 70 miles NW of Duluth, on the Mississippi where it's small enough and clean enough to swim across. Alma

-- Alma Miller (almamiller@webtv.net), April 23, 2000.

Thanks Sheepish, Yes, the Okanagon is very nice- good growing season, lakes, warm summers etc. I am more partial to the west Kootenays, which is more north of Idaho. Price of course is a major concern. We will be going on a 10 day search for small towns that we feel good in sometime in June. We sold our house here 3 years ago and have only just recently starting looking for property off this island. Too expensive here - we aren't asking for much, just a small home on 2 to 10? acres but in a quiet, clean air area fairly close to a small town for possible work. We both love parts of Washington & Oregon - you have such a beautiful countryside ( like BC ) but your towns seem better ie: off main highways, well planned and more of them rather than nothing for miles then a bigger city. Anyhow, it's all exciting looking. Take care.

-- heather (heather@bolen.bc.ca), April 26, 2000.

Steve, Are you telling me I am the only subscriber in Ks? Am I reading this thing right?

-- Susie*Ks (goodartfarm@msn.com), April 29, 2000.

Susie, the numbers for the state come after the state name, so there are 1,929 subscribers in KS, and 4 people from Kansas who have logged on to the forum. It was really interesting to see which states had the most subscribers!!

Anybody want to share what the map now looks like? How's our global distribution...?

j

-- j (jw_hsv@yahoo.com), May 12, 2000.

I had to take the pins out of my Rand McNally so I could use it to check out county locations on the states we are considering moving to -- but I don't think there have been any radical changes in distribution patterns. Looks like the bulk of forum readers are in the "heartland", with quite a few east and north, and some in the far west -- few in the Rocky mountains. A few in Canada, one in England, who knows where else that haven't checked in!!

-- Kathleen Sanderson (stonycft@worldpath.net), May 12, 2000.

Hey, sheepish: We live in Kitsap Co, WA ...where in W.WA are you? ...snoozy

-- snoozy (allen@oz.net), May 12, 2000.

I'm new to this forum and rather new to Countryside. I am a sorta new homesteader and I live in Northeast Georgia. Today 05-13-2000 it is 90 degrees. =sigh= Where did spring go? :)

In the Wynooche Valley in Western Washington, 45 miles west of Olympia. :-)

-- Michelle (thepieplace@techline.com), June 01, 2000.

After scrolling through all of the posts, it looks like we now have Indianapolis surrounded. I am in West Central Indiana about 30 miles due west of Indy. I see that we have Denise Priest 40 miles north of Indy and Phyllis Warman east of Indy (in Knightstown) and two homesteaders south of Indy (Virginia Neill and Chris Frost). Great to know that there are like-minded folks all around me! Thanks for asking the question, Sheepish, 'cause otherwise I never would have known.

-- Sandy (tripletreefarm@hotmail.com), June 01, 2000.

Sandy, you are welcome! Thanks for replying, as I hadn't checked out the latest post from Michelle over in the rainforest, practically (!) too. We are everywhere!

-- sheepish (rborgo@gte.net), June 01, 2000.

Wow, just when I thought I was the Lone Ranger someone posted from my area. This is the best question! I feel so connected! Anyway, I know the reason there are so few homesteaders in the deep south -- the bugs are too big! My area is Northwest Mississippi.

-- Yesteryear Cottage (oberg@watervalley.net), June 01, 2000.

You mean to tell me that the only other Oregonians are in the south? I feel lonesome....I'm checking in from the Willamette Valley (no, that is NOT pronounced william-ette!)

Gee Ali, you are practically in Washington...down there in the will- AM'-it area and all! Heard it's gettin' hot your way....

Hi everyone, I'm in heaven in the great state of Kentucky and yes we do have a Derby as well as Jolly ole England. I am a long time subscriber to Countryside but new to the forum thanks to a friend in Tn that gave me this wonderful place to meet so many nice people. We raise Miniature cattle that we got asquainted with through an ad in CS and also we raise Rocky Mtn. Pleasure Horses. We are just 3 miles from the Ohio River about 12 miles out of Maysville so stick a pin in that part of the map and we'll be grateful. In a year or two we hope to have a herd of Miniature Jersey Cattle and also a herd of Kentshire cattle which are black with a white face beef cattle(also miniature).I am originally from Central Indiana, Tipton, the garden spot of the world, but now am a transplanted brier hopper.Been nice visiting with all of you and may God Bless you all!

Hello everyone, I live in S.W. Idaho, about 10 miles from Boise, in Kuna (Q instead of a K) I'm in from the barn, right now ,it's baby goat time here. People sure look at you funny, when they ask what you've been doing and you reply, just looking at goat butts!! It seems you do that alot when you have babies due! It was in the mid 60's here today, and boy am I ready for spring, just to get your hands back in the dirt, that piece of mind! Well back to the barn, for last check , before bed. Bye now, Mary in Idaho

Hi Sheepish, We are in the Northeast corner of North Carolina,Currituck County. It's a beautiful place to live lots of water and very rural. Nan

-- Nan (graf_nan@hotmail.com), April 25, 2001.

Hi Sheepish: Put a pin in Wisconsin, SE of Madison, the capital. Madison is very urban and so is my area. However, I'm country through and through. Exciting things for me is a squirrel climbing up a tree, I've lived here for many years and haven't had hardly any squirrels. It's beautiful day here, the birds are chirping and I'm waiting for my lawnmower repair guy to come and pick up my riding mower. He's running late, but sure hope he shows up!

I just fell upon this sight but I am from Moultrie,Ga.. This city (small hicktown) I should say is in the deep deep south. I am so close to florida it is breathing on my back. I am not originally from Georgia..moved here 10 years ago from good ole Cali. Oh well I adapted now going to college to become a sports agent..not that yall care but hey...hope there are more people from my neck of the woods

-- Michelle (Peachesmich@hotmail.com), May 09, 2001.

I just fell on this site too, it's pretty interesting!! I'm in western Oklahoma, the panhandle, also known as "No Man's Land". For awhile it was not claimed by Texas, Kansas, or New Mexico. The outlaws used it as their home. Besides homesteading, I keep busy during deer season, quail season, dove season, pheasant season, morel mushroom season, wild grape season, sandhill plum season, the list goes on. Have enjoyed Countryside for years!!!

ms. sanderson! ooh ms. sanderson! May i have a red pin? :)

MS is short for Mississippi, for those of you not familiar w/ the states.

when i first started lurking the suggesstion came up to put some sort of location w/ your name.

It really does help humanise the typewritten words & helps immeasurably in getting good advice for your climate!

so i would propose to all that have posted here to add a climate zone to their name or add a city or parish or altitude or longitude, whatever,eh?

-- bj pepper in C. MS. (pepper.pepper@excite.com), February 18, 2002.

sheepish, not sure if you're still checking this one, and Kathleen, if you're still pinning, pin me please! As my signature says, I'm in New Mexico, northern part at about 9000'. We have a large 1 acre. Large, as it's what you do with it that counts! Chickens, ducks, geese, 1/4 acre garden... and on National forest to boot! Someday we may get more land, but for now this place makes for good practice. I've truly enjoyed this forum! Neat to see how spread out we all are. Maybe we can get a 'pinned' map into the magazine for all to see?
