THE MAIN city water pipe from the Turitea Dam treatment plant has sprung a leak at the bottom of Summerhill Drive.
Palmerston North City Council is asking all city residents to exercise restraint in water use for a few days until it is fixed.
To reduce the water flow through the leaking pipe, the four water bores on the north side of the Manawatu River are being used. South of the river, communities continue to be fed from Turitea.
The leak was noticed on Monday. It is understood an initial attempt to excavate was abandoned for safety reasons. Today, heavy equipment is expected on site.
City services and facilities manager Rob Green said the leak wasn't a big one, but there was concern it might become major.
Mr Green said the work was to be done overnight tonight, with minimum inconvenience to residents.
If the repair could not be completed before the morning rush on the water system, an urgent request to cut water demand would be made.
"There is no reason to extend water restrictions at this time, although if demand rises, we may have to review that," Mr Green said.
He said, things should be back to normal by the end of the week.
