What Do You Preachers Like To Do??greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Christian Church : One Thread |
Something a little lite-hearted here. What do you preachers do.....to get away from it all?? What hobbies and etc. do you enjoy to get your mind off of your work??
One of the elders I work with, whose son is also in the ministry, rightly stated a few months ago, that he is convinced too many preachers do not find something to get their minds off of their work for a while.
Anyway.....as for me......
I love to hunt and spend a lot of time doing it. I have devoted most of my time to bowhunting over the last 10 years and have taken a number of trophy animals recognized in both state and national record books. I like to fish.....but just inbetween hunting seasons.
Two years ago, I learned taxidermy and now have a small taxidermy business on the side. The name of my business is "His" Creations Taxidermy. Sure been a good conversation starter.
I have mounted whitetail deer, wild hogs, squirrel, pheasants and a bobcat.
All of these things provide wonderful diversions from the ministry.
So what do you guys enjoy doing??

Aside from chating in the forum... I am a Christian Illusionist (magician) and well as the preaching Minister in my church. I love learning new and performing new effects not only within my sermons, but also doing full fledge shows, which I do hire myself out to churches if the occasion arises. Last October I worked for International Foods and a Magic Representative. I went to grocery stores throughout several areas and states to promote the products of Chief Boyardee, Chruch N' Munch, and Pam ccoking spray, as well as performing a little magic.

What do I LIKE to do? A whole bunch of stuff. How often do I get to do it? Rarely.
I've taken up hunting (thanks to Danny's influence) and I've always enjoyed fishing ever since I was a little kid. I'm not the world's best at either, but I manage to eat often enough.
I'm an avid race fan - have been since I was 10 yrs old. I'll watch anybody race anything. Now that my local Cable Co. had added Speedvision to their channels - I'm in hog-heaven.
I also enjoy creating things with my hands. Whether it be a little wood-working project (I'm in the middle of building stands for my computer cases as I type), or putting together scale models - cars, planes, ships, rockets - I've done them all.
I also like to break out the ol' clarinet from time to time and work up some songs for church or work with the local school kids as they prepare for different contests. Music was a big part of my life for a long time, so I don't give it up too easily.
I guess I'm just the old "Jack" of all trades - master of none.

I enjoy reading. I love astronomy (I'm an amateur). I like hunting and fishing...fishing more so than hunting. I like to watch movies with my wife. I like to travel as well. But most of all...I enjoy wrestling with my boys in the living room!

I used to live back east where hunting was a real favorite. However, after moving to sunny CA, golf has taken the place of hunting. I enjoy doing carpentry and general home repair....... I love tools...arr arr arr......One of my most favorite things in the last year or so has been flying. There are a couple of pilots in the church here, and they have taken me up in the air quite a few times.......
I have had the opportunity to fly a glider.... not just ride in it, and have been flying a small engined plane of late. I have taken it off quite a few times. It is much easier than one might think. The landing.... hmmmmmmm .... still working on that part.
See..... Christians can have fun! And, so can the preacher!

I run sleddogs. We have 12 dogs right now. For many years I ran sprint races but we are switching to distance. Since I only get to race one race a year due to time pressures I want to make it count. Its a great sport and a real conversation starter. Its a lot of work, especially with the dog yard clean up. But worth every minute. There's nothing like watching God's creation from the runners of a dog sled to make you forget life's stresses and appreciate what He has given us.

I live in Council Bluffs, IA. We are a suburb of Omaha, NE. Its ok for training, but my racing is done in MN, MI, MT, CO and SD. Next time you're passing through the Heartland, give us a shout and we'll take you for a ride.

I have a 1962 Ford Falcon that is just waiting to be restored. When I was in OH I started tearing it apart but since we moved to FL I haven't had a chance to get back to work on it. I bought the car for $200 and it cost $250 to tow it down here.I also have 5 kids and a collie that keeps me fairly active.
