Granville, Ohio 911 service unavailable for 2 hours

Monday, January 31, 2000

For about two hours yesterday morning, 911 service in Granville, Ohio, stopped working.

"We had a one-auto accident with a person trapped'' at about 8:30 a.m., Fire Chief Dudley Wright said. "People who live nearby tried to call 911 and got a dead line. They called police, who called the fire dispatchers.''

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries, "so there were no consequences of the delay in calling,'' Wright said.

Concerned that others might need to make emergency calls, the fire department called radio and television stations with an alternate number to use and gave the number to clergy in town to alert congregants at church services.

Wright said the telephone company had installed 911 lines Friday and Saturday and responded quickly to fix the problem by 10:30 a.m.
