Sewage spill taints Buena Vista Creek area

UNION-TRIBUNE

February 2, 2000

OCEANSIDE -- Sewage from a main that ruptured Monday along Buena Vista Creek is being diverted to Carlsbad, and the creek, lagoon and nearby beaches have been posted for contamination.

Officials at the county Department of Health said yesterday the posting will continue until tests show that the water is safe.

Warnings advise against fishing or any other contact with the water.

Before temporary corrective measures could be taken, city authorities reported that 1.7 million gallons of sewage had spilled into the creek at a pumping station on Haymar Road.

It took seven hours to complete rerouting of the sewage through Vista and Carlsbad lines.

Sewage line problems have been all too common in San Diego County...'cept that the usual problem is the 'stuff' that drifts up the coast from Tijuana!
