Carlstadt says delay in road salt delivery hurt snow removal

CARLSTADT -- Paul Ritchie, Department of Public Works supervisor, said Wednesday that the borough didn't have one of the most important weapons in snow removal: salt.

He said he was waiting on a delivery of 100 tons of salt from the county's new vendor and that plowing the streets without the other white stuff is "like building a house without any lumber."

He added: "We had worse snowstorms and the roads were clearer. We had the material."

He said residents noticed.

"We got complaints. We did the best we could," Ritchie said. "The main roads are clear now. The side streets are still bad."

Thom Ammirato, spokesman for the county executive, said he was told the borough recently turned away a delivery of 50 tons of salt. Ammirato acknowledged that the county's new vendor has had some delivery problems because of a computer glitch.

Although Ritchie could not be reached for comment on Ammirato's remarks, Carlstadt Mayor William Roseman said he doesn't understand what could have happened.

"Maybe there was some miscommunication somewhere," Roseman said. "I don't know."

No, I wasn't crazy for having canned goods and TP in my basement. We can all be very thankful for the fact that these same sort of problems haven't hit our local grocery stores.

I wonder, if not for people like Ed Yourdon and Gary North, would we be as well off now as we are?
