What does it mean when the egg that is collected has blood all over the shell? Is something wrong with my chicken? What should I look for?

Cher: I too found bloody eggs from only one hen, about 3 or 4 days in a row, but it stopped and have had no further incidents. We had too many roosters in with our hens for a while, and I think the hens were getting "over visited" if you get my drift. In any case, just wash the eggs, and they should be fine. We did get one really huge egg one day, and the next day a small egg about the size of a pidgeon egg. Probably from the same hen, but no way to prove it. They are supposed to lay the same shape and color egg most of the time, so if you know which hen lays which shape/color, you can identify it. The pidgeon egg had no yolk, just a few yellow strings in it. very weird. Good luck! Jan

Bloody eggs are usually from pullets that have just started laying.Sometimes it takes them a few days to get stetched out if you know what I mean.They are fine and it should stop as soon as they have all been laying for a week or so.

This happens periodically with our hens. Mostly we never even know which ones do it. It rarely happens two days in a row. Don't worry. David C.
