Any community sustained agriculture opportunities near you?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am currently living in Florida, but would like to make a move to a more seasonal climate, preferably the Midwest(SW missouri).I am very interested in becoming part of a Community supported agricultural community with emphasis on suppling fresh, organic goods to city dwellers, resturants, etc.I would prefer a christian based community, but would love to hear from anyone interested in starting such an enterprise.I also am open to moving to other states where CSA's are active.Thanks.

Response to Any community sustained agriculture opportunities?

I operate a CSA in southern Ohio. Most CSA's(community supported agriculture) are owned and operated by individual farmers. Some are owned by non-profit organizations. I raise organic produce and sell through a csa and farmers markets. The csa is a system where the farmer supplies produce to a specific consumer on a membership basis. For instance my csa begins accepting members in febuary. They pay an upfront deposit(which is my seed money) and then several payments during the season. In mid may I begin to deliver produce and continue through october. The members receive a "share " of whatever is growing. We raise a variety of veggies, herbs and fruit. I think it is a great niche market. I have not heard of any communities doing csa, though.
