Importing Images from CF to Sony Notebook Computer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

This is a very basic question. I have a Nikon CoolPix 950 and want to import images from its 48 MB MicroTech CF card into my new Sony VAIO N505-VX notebook computer, which according to the User Guide has a PC card slot that will accommodate either Type I or Type II PC cards. I'm taking an extended trip to New Zealand and Australia soon, and space as well as weight is very important. Accordingly, I need something that is fool-proof, small, and light weight. 1. Is a CF - PC Card Adapter the best way to go? 2. If so, do you have any suggestions regarding the CF - PC Card Adapter supplier? It appears several manufacturers provide these Adapters, e.g., MicroTech, Simple Technology, Nikon, etc. Can you recommend Web-based sources? 3. Am I likely to encounter problems getting the Adapter installed on my Sony and getting the device to work?

Everything I have heard, transferring files from a pc card slot is about the fastest method. The card adapters are relatively cheap. If you want to check online for one, go to Pricewatch.com and do a search for Compact Flash. It will give you a list of companies usually listing by price. For example: a company called Memory Monster sells one for $5 (shipping cost is not listed here).

From what I have seen, the CF in the adapter is treated like a harddrive and thus the transfer speeds are just as quick.

I use the Lexar PCMCMIA flash card adapter on my Sony 505SX notebook and it works great. Once you insert the card it takes about 8-10 seconds for the computer to recognize the media. At that point it will show up as another drive letter under "My Computer". Double click on the drive letter and your pictures are right there. Its the fastest method for a laptop and its very cheap. I saw an adapter at Best Buy for like $15. BTW, I use the 950 Nikon and the Sony together and never had a problem.
