Y2K bug blocks Net mail checks at post offices

It has been impossible since Jan. 1 to check the registration and delivery of registered mail on the Internet at 146 of the 6,110 post offices nationwide equipped to do so, the Posts and Telecommunications Ministry announced Friday, because software to correct Y2K glitches had not been installed.

The ministry said the system would be fixed by Saturday and that deliveries of registered mail had not been affected.

According to the ministry, an employee at a post office in Yamaguchi Prefecture noticed that data on the registration, arrival and delivery of registered mail could not be sent to the general postal information center Thursday afternoon and that the system was functioning abnormally.

Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., the terminals' manufacturer, had earlier submitted to the ministry a letter guaranteeing that it had completed inspections to prepare for any Y2K problems, according to the ministry.
