In previous posts comparing unplanned reactor shutdowns 1/1-1/6 in the US in different years, I inadvertently listed one more shutdown in 1999 than I should have...

Point Beach 3 at http://www.nrc.gov/NRR/DAILY/990107dr.htm had a notice with the first line being

"- UNIT 1 SHUTTING DOWN DUE TO INOPERABLE SI SYSTEM DUE TO FROZEN || RECIRCULATION LINE"

However, I failed to note the event notice had no "SCRAM" code and the reactor was, in fact, not actually shut down. What happened is some pipes froze in cold weather and according to regulations when those pipes are inoperative the reactor MUST be shut down with a short, specified period of time.

The plant requested a waiver and successfully thawed out the pipe before having to shut down the reactor completely; they reduced power some.

I care a lot about accuracy and apologize for the error.

With that change, instead of there being more shutdowns 1/1-1/6 in the US in 1999 than 2000, there are the same number (2).

Thank you for your honesty on that. But still noone has addressed my concern about the *three* *unplanned* shutdowns that occured just the day prior to when you begin counting: Dec 31st 99. These shutdowns have the appearance of being somewhat preemptive. What do you think? Is the total of 6 *unplanned* shutdowns in 7 days not very unusual? You keep appearing to avoid mentioning the 31st. Why is that?

Ok..for the third time...

There were NOT three shutdowns in one day :-) There were two on the 30th of December and one on the 31st.

They all may have turned up in the same newspaper article at the same time...

But check the event times at http://www.nrc.gov/NRR/DAILY/drlist.htm

Also, in doing some research for my first ever actual PREDICTIONS which I'll unveil tomorrow, I found....

Two shutdowns on the same day, 1/23/99.

Five shutdowns in 10 days, 1/22/97 to 1/31/97, including shutdowns on consecutive days on 1/22 and 1/23. This was after NO shutdowns from 1/8 to 1/21. Indicating how random it can be and how shutdowns can simply bunch themselves for no particular reason.

This was merely searching Januarys for the past three years alone..

I have little doubt that if I read the whole years (which I do not have the intention of doing) I could turn up 3 shutdowns in two days.
