Two more y2k failures to report today. Owner of company I do programming work for tried to use his Amaco Visa card tried at local Walmart today in Western Pa. Card refused. He has had card since 93 and it was last used extensively in Dec 99. Walmart manager called Amaco Visa and was told they have no record of the card or cardholder. Client hoping they lost his Dec 99 bill.

This client has only one customer which is a division of a multibillion dollar company. His customer ran a month end process which effects the payment of millions of dollars to my client's company and seven other companies just like his. (All of these companies are clients of mine). The process totally failed because of y2k and has also corrupted various databases. Told by person in charge of process they have no idea when this will be fixed. These eight mfg companies combined employ between 500 - 800 people depending on time of year. If their one and only customer cannot get or keep its act together these seven companies will disappear quickly.

Y2k was and is not a hoax. Day to day I have vary limited contacts but in the past two days I have been made aware of some significant y2k problems. Am I just lucky or what? Yesterday I posted problem with payroll service in Michigan not being able to process payrolls because of y2k. At this point I have no idea how all of this is going to shake out but it seems that it is just as reasonable to expect major problems as to not at this point in time.

Interesting post! Thanks! Almost everyone I talk to here on Maui has an anecdonte about the effects of y2k. Most of them are seemingly minor, but from the results of the posts problems are clearly worldwide. Examples from Maui:

Major Chain Drug Store with wrong customer information on computer Auto shop unable to schedule appointments because the computer which worked fine before rollover, crashed. Computerized alarm systems that won't function now. Several unexplained power outages that we assured were not caused by y2k, etc.

What I'd like to know is where the hell is my mail? There are some regular monthly statements and bills I usually get like clockwork near the 1st of the month, still not here.

I had a friend call yesterday, saying that the ATM showed $300 more in her account than should be there. Asked for my advice, I said leave it, notify the bank.

My son-in-law received a notice from his brokerage of a $1,092 dollar purchase which he did not make. He has stock in B of A that he inherited, but does not play the market. Told him to contact the broker immediately.

Looks like the financial institutions are having some problems.

PS - My server is going down in 5 minutes due to the following:

"Our backbone provider suffered a failure of their primary router last night around 11:00pm. They were able to give it a temporary fix to get it working this morning around 9:00, but need to complete the job. They did not advise us of this failure until they were contacted after many of you noticed the inability to get out onto the Internet.

They will be bringing down the router tongiht at midnight and will take 2-3 hours to effect a permanent fix. As such, access out to the Internet will be down during that time, 12:00 midnight tonight until about 3:00 AM tomorrow moring.

If this Y2K thing is not a hoax, which I honestly can not tell, there are three places where it will be brought to light in the near future: at the gas pump, in the courts and the unemployment rolls. These are places the media cannot cover over. Time will tell.

I agree. It also cannot be hidden in government entitlement checks such as social security, vet disability, food stamps, disability, etc. Some agencies (I think some State agencies) issued checks early as a precaution. So, we will see and hear about missed payouts should they occur.

Folks who miss pension payouts and reverse mortgages also will speak up. Too many areas that are impossible to hide.

I think some of the Post Office branches are having trouble. If they were working properly I would have gotten my mail from at least one or two places, but I have gotten NOTHING since last week! Anybody heard anything fom that Nine Inch Nails guy that works for the PO ?
