enlarger and type 55

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Printing & Finishing : One Thread

I currently use a very old dejure enlarger which works fairly well although it is a pain to focus and realy can't print any thing smaller than 6x6 because the bellows just don't compress enough, But any way, i'm thinking about getting a new used enlager something a little bit more refined than the 1940's area dejure. The only thing I really need is enough coverage to comfortably do type 55 negs with all the nice boder stuff they add. I'm consdering going to a 5x7 for that reason but don't want to if I don't have to.

thanks

An old Omega D-2 with decent bellows should do you just fine. You may want want to put an Aristo cold light head in it. Their round model drops right in. Neg carriers are available that can be milled or filed oversize to expose the Type 55 border.

Most 4x5 enlargers are designed for 4x5 negatives which are about 3 3/4" x 4 3/4". If you leave all of the stuff that is on a Type 55 negative, it is larger than the negative stage area of an Omega D2. A 5x7 enlarger with a glass negative carrier would be needed for the full frame image encluding the nice border stuff.
