McAfee Virus Scan Minor Glitch?greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread |
I ran a full virus scan on all my hard drives Dec 31st after downlading their latest virus definition files. I wanted to make one last check for any New Year's viruses on my machine.Today I noted a post on CSY2K from Symantec concerning viruses found in a polly's post there and on other news groups. Concerned, I decided to do a precautionary scan od my main hard drive.
When I called up McAfee Virus Scan (V4.0), there was a message advising that I was overdue in running a full scan. My advisory duration is set at 180 days, the last full scan was run three days ago.
Perhaps the date transition confused the duration calculation?

BTW: Scan showed no virus.

Minor correction: That post was from Dr Solomon, not Symantec.Further info on the warning, The virus in question is W32/ska.exe. The news groups hit with it were Alt.Politics.Economics, Comp.Software.Year-2000 (CSY2K), Misc.Invest.Stocks and Alt.Talk.Year- 2000.

Mine is doing the same thing! What do I do? I scanned the 31st and the 1st, same message.

Same thing happened to me. Ran another scan today and it STILL says I haven't run one in 30 days. Also, and even worse, it also says that my free update period has expired even though I just bought the latest version just before Christmas. Arrggg. Guess I'll try to hit the McAfee Support lines tomorrow.

That's a bug in the program, not from Y2K since mine was doing that several weeks before 01/01/2000.
