My DVD Player does not have dual lasers. Help!greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread |
I have a GE Model 1105p. The manuel says that it cannot play cd-rs; but it has no reference that is cannot play CD-RWs. I am almost sure that if I find the right kind of disc it will play. The manuel even said bogus things like " If you attempt to play CD-R the wavelength of the player may erase it." If anyone has any experience searching for the right kind of Cd-R or CD-Rw disk, can you please tell me the brand. ThanksP.S. I have tried Severeal CD-Rs. I get two kinds messages for different colors. When I tried the blue disc, the display said that there was no disc in the player. When I tried the green disc, it was ejected and said the type of disc was not compatible and to check the disc.
Thanks in Advance, Dustin

What brand of cdrs are you talking about? Quite a few companies make blue bottoms and they all can give different results. My older dvd player (pioneer 606d all region) can only play 2 kinds of cdr(found through trial and error) they are the memorex blue bottom and a cdrw that came with my Plextor burner(the cdrw is a silverish on the bottom). Did you try memorex blues? the easiest way to find them is to make sure you get a memorex cdr AUDIO cd(it will say this on the package) otherwise you risk getting their greenish color disc which my older player will not read. Alsao maybe try thier rewritables as well. My new dvd player plays everything(pioneer 525 all region)i seem to throw at it. But give the memorex ones a shot. my older player like yours was made not to read cdr media, but i foiund at least 2 kinds that it can.---Doug

In addition to responses on the last two postings, here is some more that might interest you. DVD set-tops made in Japan for use in Europe or Asia generally can play VCDs. Those made specifically for use in North America, however, like nearly all, (if not all) RCA/Thompson models old and new, and, gasp!, GE, and oh yes Zenith, are NOT made to play VCDs. The most immediate way of finding out is on front, it simply says DVD/CD player. Likewise you get the hint if Video CD isn't mentioned even once in the manual. So you actually have to hurdle two things here: what brand/model of CD-R/CD-RW does that GE recognize, if at all; and does it play VCDs??? In the end you may find out shelling $250 for a Pioneer 525 isn't a bad idea. No I'm not promoting them; they just handily play my creations without fuss, and most likely will do the same to yours.

Well, thanks for the last post. But on the box it does say that it plays VCDs and it does play VCDs really well. I am only having a problem with it playing CD-Rs.

If your player does not have dual-lasers, you will run into problems with CD-Rs and CD-RWs. GE is currently manufactured by Thompsen Electronics, who in turn also makes RCA and ProScan. Very few if any RCA, ProScan, and GE DVD players are capable of reading CD-Rs or CD- RWs. I did get my RCA 5210P DVD/VCD player to read a special type of CD-R. Called a silver on silver variety. It works well for these units.

The only CDs that I have got to ply in all DVD Players tested are the Sony CDQ 74CN. My Philips does not have dual lasers and they work fine.
