Keep the Internet up!!!greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread |
We have less than a week. We must start spreading the message: Keep the Internet up! No shutdowns of Internet systems, servers, etc. at the rollover. Freedom of access to information on what's happenning. If the system crashes, so be it. If the net goes down due to y2k then probably more important systems will crash (power, phones, etc.) so the loss of the net will be just part of the greater extent of outages. But why pull the system just when people need it the most to get information. Personnally I'll be off the net from about 4:20PM 12/31 until 5:30 PM 1/1 for religious reasons. But those not restricted because of Sabbath observence need full access.

not worried:"Personnally I'll be off the net from about 4:20PM 12/31 until 5:30 PM 1/1 for religious reasons."
Then don't worry, because if all goes as planned, the net will only have problems during the hours that you are off for religious reasons. Imagine, all of those data routes unplugging at the time that many people will be accessing the web to find out what is happening world-wide. It will be a mess for a while, but not an indication that the world is ending.
Best wishes,,,,

Religious reasons aside, I share the view that the Internet should be up and running without interference. If it crashes due to a major failure, that, of course, cannot be controlled. Arbitrary shutdowns? No Way!

Irving:I agree with the direction of your statement: but, the internet is not a something like GE. There will be a slowdown; but if all goes well, it should not fail.
Best wishes,,,,
