Evanston/Skokie School District 65's payroll woes continued Wednesday when 147 direct-deposit checks got misrouted to the wrong accounts, prompting a rash of teacher complaints and an immediate letter of apology from Supt. Hardy Murphy.
"This has been a concern in previous years, but has hit crisis proportions this year," said John Lalley, president of the District 65 Teachers Union. "Most of us have not had a correct paycheck since the beginning of the school year."
Teachers also said that merit raises were not showing up on their checks, an issue district officials said they were investigating.
District 65 spokesman Marshall Rosenthal said the mistake was made in the district's business office, when a worker failed to make necessary routing code changes after last year's merger between First Chicago NBD Corp. and Bank One Corp.
Rosenthal said the problem is being investigated internally. Murphy also has contacted the Illinois Association of School Business Officials and the district's accounting firm to audit the office as another way toward fixing the problem permanently.
Wednesday's snafu was the latest paycheck headache that teachers and administrators have experienced in recent years.
"The superintendent is intent on getting this corrected," Rosenthal said Wednesday.
