Texas Co-op Power Magazine Y2K Update: Navy Refutes Y2K Panic Claim by Doomsayergreenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread |
I'm typing this verbatum. I don't believe there is an Internet version. The U.S. Navy says that a recent year 2000 readiness report claiming that local electric utilities were not Y2K compliant on some Naval bases was an unofficial and outdated assessment of the bases' external utility providers.
The report, which was the basis of a widely circulated Associated Press (AP) story, was "a working document containing anecdotal information," the Navy said. "There are no indications of widespread failures of water, electricity, gas or sewer [services]."
In related news, cooperatives and other utlities participated in a nation-wide test or "drill" for the upcoming millennium change. The drill, coordinated by the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC), was prompted by the September 9 date, or 9/9/99, as the perfect time for utilities to test their readiness status and procedures. The results of this latest national Y2K readiness test revealed that utiliies throughout the nation were 99 percent ready, according to Department of Energy Secretary Bill Richardson.

This article makes my stomach hurt. Less than 30 days to go. I'm out in the sticks surrounded by DGI neighbors. I put in a solar well at great expense. It is the only non electric water source FOR MILES. I will supply water for my neighbors, but food supplies only go so far. I've done the math.I had hopes that there would be some awakening this month and AT LEAST some last minute preps. But with articles like these in local utility publications it ain't gonna happen.

You must be reading out of PEC's newsletter. Thus, you are surrounded by at least one GI, me.
Howdy, neighbor!

mostlylurking; fact is, there's almost nothing BUT "anecdotal information" to be had. No corporate attorney worth their salt will allow their client to admit to much of anything either way (although positioning themselves for some post-event fingerpointing is always acceptable). No government shill (and I won't mention any names here, but their initials are JK and JG) can ever say that anything is less than 99+% A-OK. And when the utilities say, "Jump," NERC says, "How high?"No one knows for sure. I know that's overused, but overused phrases usually get overused because there's a ring of truth there.

Hang in there mostlylurking!Do you live anywhere near Dog Gone?
Water is all I worry about.
Well, that and having enough ammo.

mostlylurking,Hey, cool. Another Texan who intalled a solar well! Two of my neighbors saw me drill it so I'll know I'll be sharing with them if the power is out. That's cool. Everybody else gets to haul water from the Colorado river. That'll be fun and sanitary.

My area is serviced by Central Texas Electric Co-op. I'm in the middle of the Texas Hill Country. It's hot. It's dry. My tank (22 feet deep when full) looks like a mud puddle. I'm west of Fredericksburg. I just wish I was about 30 miles further west. The Friday afternoon before the opening of deer season was really a trip; we drove thru town & within 2 minutes counted AT LEAST 50 incoming hunters loaded to the hilt with 4 wheelers, deer blind towers & assorted guns & accessories. Unbelievable. Funny, I never really paid any attention before....

My area is served by the Dog Gone Solar Power Company. Sure, HL&P provides backup power from the two nukes down the road that still aren't compliant, but we can't always choose our neighbors, can we?Instead of running my solar well into a pond (although that's eventually the plan after Y2K), I'm pumping it directly into the house in an enclosed system using a storage tank for reserve.
My main concern is that strangers will discover that I have a cool set- up and they'll kill me and eat me.
Ah well, you can't eliminate all risk in life, can ya?
