This is in response to several requests for more information on my knowledge of what Mr. CEO has to say about utilities. I also want to comment on some of the attacks on me.

The most important part of Mr. CEOs story has already been told. As previously revealed, he believes a loss of forty to sixty percent of the nations electrical power for 2-3 weeks and dirty power for a year is a best case scenario. Much of the remainder is supportive detail.

In addition he indicated his company is finding embedded chip failure rates that are much higher (5-10%) than the optimistic figures being reported by the likes of Bennett/Koskinen (0.3-0.5%). Also, it has been his experience that many utility (and other) companies are not undergoing independent verification and validation (IV&V) of their Y2K projects because they dont want the dirty paper in their files. The implication is that in the event of lawsuits, no IV&V is preferable to a failed IV&V.

At one time I was interested in arranging a meeting between Mr. CEO, Senator Bennett and John Koskinen. I changed my mind when he said he had reason to believe they already had all of this information.

I am not as convinced as many on this board are of the overwhelming importance of Mr. CEOs information. At this point, very few people are likely to have their minds changed about Y2K no matter what kind of information they are given. I also believe that Mr. CEOs revelations should not be accepted as gospel. In my judgment this information does not guarantee there will be massive power outages. It is simply an opinion albeit one from a uniquely qualified source.

The bottom line is there is no time remaining for any meaningful action to take place. There was a moment in time prior to the Titanics collision with the iceberg when nothing could be done on the bridge or in the engine room that would change the events about to happen. We are now in that breathless moment. The collective captain (Clinton, Gore, Koskinen, Bennett, Greenspan, Gates et.al.) has decided to prepare for the best case. Regardless of how Y2K turns out this decision is wrong but it has been made.

The only appropriate action on the part of Y2K believers is to make one more stop by your stateroom to ensure you havent left anything behind. Prayer is also a good idea.

Incidentally, for the gentleman who stated that up until this Y2K issue I was a life long failure, I offer the following,

I have been married to the same woman for thirty-eight years and have eight grown children and nine grandchildren who all love me.

I served my country in the US Navy for 24 years rising through seven enlisted grades and six officer ranks.

I spent eighteen months in combat in Vietnam.

I graduated with honors earning a degree in business from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

I taught business courses at the college level for two and half years. As a government contractor, I also taught principles of satellite command and telemetry to over 3500 students.

I spent nineteen months as the marketing director and principal R&D engineer for a small electronics firm in Florida. When I joined the company it was losing $20,000 a month. When I left it was making a third of a million dollars a month.

I served my country further by spending fifteen years a a defense contractor in the Washington DC area. I have held a multitude of high level security clearances and worked for years on several of this nation's most highly classified programs.

And all this before Y2K came into my life. Risking immodesty, I will admit to being proud of these failures.

I know its tough but why dont you stick to discussing the issues instead of making personal attacks on the participants. You belittle only yourself.

My problem with the anonymity of Mr. CEO is that it gives me nothing substantial to go to my family with to convince them to make greater preparations. At this point, of course, it's becoming moot, as we are rapidly running out of time. Having a name and a face to attach to a story would (hopefully) be more effective in convincing family members that their 'few days' scenario is too optimistic.

What a gracious reply to someone whose words didn't merit such civility. You have enumerated so many noteworthy successes in this thread that the guy who attacked your character and accomplishments should be terribly ashamed...if he has any integrity.

For what it's worth, I agree with Mr. CEO's decision. There are only 4 weekends left before rollover. One more piece of information, no matter how credible the source or sensational the content, is not going to change the outcome or create a stampede of last-minute bean buyers. For Mr. CEO, the odds would be extremely low while the stakes remained unacceptably high.

Dear Jim, There is no doubt in my mind that Y2K will mean much suffering. You, Paula, Gary, and others have publicly tried to sound the alarm and wake people up at the expense of being called doomers, alarmists, fools, whatever. A huge thank you for running scout and taking the flak from the loose cannons. There is obviously a huge force behind you (I was going to say army, but I don't want to dis' an olde navy man) on your position. Even though the masses are still partying on the Titanic, while Ko skin em and Clinton are sailing in an ICey Cea (ICC ;o)). Those few brave souls who could bear your message and act on it, are standing by at the lifeboats (if not already in them). Due to the preps we have made, and what we have learned on how to handle an emergency. We will be able to step to action on our block, village and community and offer a clear, sound advice on how to enter a liferaft and how to row.

Also, because people like you have made Y2K a household word, if and when problems occur. The DGI'S will understand the gravity of the situation much quicker, therefore respond in kind, than if the laisse faire campaign had been total. It's as if the passengers of the Titanic had just seen a movie about a big ship hitting an iceberg. 95% of the viewers would not have done anything about it, while 5% would have prep'ed to some degree. But when the ship hit, you would see ALL those liferafts occuppied and quickly.

I only met Jim once in passing in April 1998, but I "served" proudly with him as a columnist on the good ship Westergaard.

In my five years of Y2Ktime, I've become somewhat jaded & judgemental about folks motivations concerning the involvment with Y2K.

In my book, Jim passes all tests with flying colors. As anyone who attempts to deliver unpleasant news ("shoot the messenger") Jim had much to loose by sticking his neck out, & very little to gain.
