Out of all the things I may know about Edgar Allan Poe I know this, he never was gay. There were too many loves in his life, meriads of poems and stories written to girls, females, that he has loved. There is no possible way he could have been gay.

The way he describes(with utter reticence) another poet who is obviously gay is written from such a point of view to suggest Poe was not. Another importunate friend is quietly avoided. I can't remember the names, but Poe not get far into the subject, though he seemed objectively aware of the proclivities of others. The really strange stuff is his hysterically platonic flirtations with various women, not all of whom were as honest or innocent as himself. His relationship with Virginia, while not completely intellectually fulfilling, was by today's standards open and robust, not just a poetic exercise.
