This could be good news...if this is a routine maintenance thing, they will use the time to complete the Y2K conversion.

Here in Central Arizona, the third unit at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is being modified to be Y2K compliant during a routine maintenance shutdown.

LOLOLOL...HaaaHaaaaaHaaaa

Well pard! There might be some question on the time matter! Chuckle, I helped build and calibrate that unit of the San Juan station.....Heeeheee some one is blowing smoke in the wind, if they think that it'll have the systems free of date defective chips between now ant summer of 2000... (hint! start looking at the fuel injectors on the boiler facing, then lok towards the water make up, go down to the conveyor lines, check ALL interlocks linking back to the safty blow off valve on the boiler. Awwwww! Just check the whole thing over, Foxboro automated systems are married to Honeywell sensors and Seimens on the stack, rapers in the bottle room (this removes particulate matter from the exhaust smoke). Be darn sure to check the H2S sensors in the yard. (we encountered a some times havy concetration of H2S)...A few day, weeks and she's fixed? YEA RIGHT! LOL.......

Hee, Hee, When the emmission monitoring equiptment for the EPA goes AWOL just lie, "We sent the data didn't you receive it. Oh your server is down, oops hope you didn't lose all that valuable data."

My Dear mr.Dinty Moore

This reminds me of when we where calibrating the H2S sensors out in an area of coal handling on this unit (and it's sister units)...To make a long story short. One of the electricans(our) was (doing terminations in a control cabinent) and accidently removed one (1) #16 guage wire from a wrong terminal block! This was / is about a 1/2 mile from the units...Waaaaay out in the coal yard!

When the wire in question came away from the terminal block, the electrican knew instantly he has messed up!!!! Man! There began a series of explosive (loud and like gun shots) openings of main control breakers in the control room (there are about a hundred of of those big mothers in that one control room)

When we ran out side, we could hear the main breakers popping all the way to the units.AAaaand Then!!!! The safty valve turned loose, dumping the boiler!!!LOL

It takes 24 hours to re-set the units and to bring them back on line..(you have to one, reset all breakers, give water make up time to process distilled water (I mean distilled. The water they call in the grocery store distilled, is way too impregnated with minerals etc. to be used in a steam boiler system).

The reason why I know all this, is simply because the next morning when we cleared the gate. The Project Manager w/ two scurity gurds were waitng at the gate for the electrican who had mistakenly remove the wire...As the Manager handed the old boy his termination slip and final paycheck. He thanked him for costing the power company more than a million dollars in lost production. Then the guy looked at me and said..."The shortest time we can get a unit on line, after it has dumped it's steam is 24 hours. Every one has made predictions, every one but me. Sigh...Now we are arriving at the beginning of the time that I "Think" we will be having the embedded problems...at least with the units, plants and complexes I helped to build...

I built these things too Shakey, back in the mid to late 70's. I think you are 100% correct in your opinion. fixing these plants is going to be more akin to a total rebuild than a maintainence op.
