I own a Sony S500D and I can play very cheap cd-rs. I have not been able to play cd-rw, but maybe I haven't been using the right brand. And even then, I'm not out to try since the media I use works just fine. I use Memorex 50 cd spindle without label and I burn at 1x. I can play these discs without fault.HazyMind

Sony DVP-S530D: CD-R -- NO CD-RW -- YES
-- Santa's Little Helper (foo@bar.com), November 23, 1999.
When I went out with friend recently to buy a Sony VCD Discman we took a VCD recorded on CTX silver media CD-R to test with and while in the shop we decided to see which of the existing Sony DVD players on display would accept it. The pattern we saw was this: older Sony DVD players that said "dual-discrete optical pickup" or something like that in front, on the tray facade itself mostly, played our CD-R properly, like the 715 and 515. Newer ones, like the 725, refused our disc. Curiously, in all of these newer ones, "dual-discrete..." is nowhere to be found in the faceplate. The only older model that wouldn't reliably recognize our CD-R was the high-end 7700; it played our disc maybe 2 out of 5 times we tried. We wonder what Sony's current policy is in regressing back to making DVD players that do not recognize CD-Rs, while Pioneer has done the opposite: all its newer models have "twin-wave lasers" and are therefore able to read CD-Rs. Philips has continued to make sure all its DVD players do recognize CD-Rs. Toshiba, Panasonic, and most others seem not to care either way.

DVP-C650D: No to both. I'm upset with Sony for regressing, since the older 600D was able to read CD-Rs, which led to my purchase of the 650 (naively assuming that they wouldn't cripple their machine). The 650's manual even states that the machine will not read CD-Rs.

All the new SONY DVD Players have a precision drive and the olders have dual discrete that means the newest model don't play cd-r because they don't want piracy anymore

DVP-C650D update: I am able to play Memorex Platinum CD-RWs. I tested this with a simple audio CD copy. However, it is still not working with burned Video CDs, but that is probably a problem with my CD burning software (NTI CD-Creator).
