I just put down the phone, this passed on to me, hoping for confirmation of the name of the electric company and town outside of Denver in a day or two. On the bottom of her friend's electric bill was a notice advising her of water/food/warmth preparations for at least 6 months. Will pass on further information as I get it.

Pretty piss-assy way to inform the public of the horrific mess and all the lies. Why didn't they start preparing everyone ten or five years ago, doing it in a responsible way and treating everyone as capable of acting responsibly towards their neighbors, friends, and community? I'm pissed off and I'm somewhat prepared. What kind of a reaction is there going to be with no time to do adequate preparation???? Someone wrote somewhere that the "leaders" secretiveness will add anger to the fear, which is the real "worst case scenario".

The train as well as the smoke can be seen in the not too distant landscape. I expect the timing of the y2k movie will turn it into a Bullet train. My advise has always been, "just get out of the way." It pisses me off "cause it didn't have to be this way. (Sorry about venting here. I'm off to get a good movie now, something I'll really miss!!!)

It can't possibly be Public Service Company of Colorado. Their stuffer this months say's that they are "ready and waiting for Y2K". Made it through all the tests and will have staff members at key facilities new Year's Eve "to monitor the system for any unexpected trouble and make any necessary repairs quickly and safely." Uh huh...gotcha. Last month they were offering rebates of up to $2,500.00 on solar electric systems and 2 or 3 months ago they were advising the 3 day senario. Me thinks me smells something fishy!!!!!

Redheaded, without meaning to you wrote your own answer. Supposing the notice is true, this was one area outside of Denver, and yet you wrote the above, "the public...preparing everyone..."

That'd be one of many reasons why. To alert one group of folk of grim times ahead would have had the whole nation in a panic. When one limited area is alerted that is not a cry for "the public...preparing everyone." Some areas and their utilities will be fine and yet these people would all jam the system "just in case."

Paula, I suppose that YOUR local system will be fine. I am not willing to bet that Duke Power will be compliant. My major fear is the fact that Duke is a power wholesaler and cannot unlock from the grid....the government won't let it since that would throw a lot of small distributors completely out of the system.

Might I suggest YOU try to get a straight answer from your electric company. Unless you are really a sucker for a stright line, you most likely will not get anything but smoke and mirrors. Wake up.

Please provide confirmable data. Name the company. Precise wording of the statement would be useful. Anything else that would help to verify what you are saying.

Sorry for the third degree here but I agree that it doesn't smell right based upon all the other statements we are seeing.

I wrote to my power company and, while not as dramatic as redheaded, this is what they had to say:

"Just as we are developing contingency plans for the Year 2000, we encourage customers to consider their special needs and implement contingency plans in case telecommunications, public transportation, power, or financial services, are interrupted for a period of time as the result of Year 2000. Preparedness planning is everyone's responsibility, and each company and individual must decide what steps are necessary to address its particular circumstances and potential vulnerabilities."

They also stated:

"We take the Year 2000 problem seriously and are fully committed to the Year 2000 process and plan. Our goal is to have our mission- critical systems Year 2000 ready by the end of the third quarter of 1999. However, because of the complex interaction of computers, communications, and our dependency on others for products and services, we are unable to issue Year 2000 compliance representations or guarantees."

This is not a "friend of a friend of a friend" this is a letter in my possession as I write this. It is written on Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) stationary out of San Francisco and it is signed by George Orlov, Vice President - Chief Information Officer

Our official OEM County Task Force recommends two months of supplies. http://209.232.195.206/website/y2k.htm However, our electric company is only a distributor of electricity and we are in a remote area. (The most remote areas have recommendations for six months supplies.)
