The reports of companies decided to take prudent action are beginning to roll in. Good! The herd surely cannot read all these without thinking, "Maybe we outta have some ravioli on the shelf just in case."

Can they?

Thanks Lane!

Well folks...

Just Another...another@engineer.com's nightmare is going to come true. I think if you have read his post, there was the part about there being a class of embeded chips (systems) which would continue to run through the roll over. But would experience a digital heart attack when they where shut down, then re-booted after the roll over and encountered their first time (to them) date of 2000.

I made a major trip to check that stance of his out, and sad to say,

Just Another is excately right. And another unfortunate circumstance also. They are almost always the one for one types..And possibly not in current stock at the vendors. Since they were made some years back.

WHHHEEEeeee! "And they are going to take me away today! To the funny farm...Where everything is beautiful all the time". And Old Bob Brock the polly/ Grand Doomer of c.s.y2k is right! The embed systems will fail with in a short number of weeks (or days).

".. just to be safe" ....

sure. no problem .. bump in the road .. just to be safe .. i love it!

why do i feel like 98% of the world doesnt see the irony in these types of statements? i mean .. if y2k is already FIXED .. and is TRULY nothing to worry about .. then why are all these contingency plans being made??? oh right ... JUST TO BE SAFE

polly wanna cracker?

Shakey-

shutting down the flow of oil does not necessarily mean they SHUT DOWN the power to the embeddeds and reboot them.

..."We feel we're fully Y2K-compliant," ...

I just love the word "FEEL", kind makes me warm and fuzzy all over. Thanks for the post ;-)

Hmmmm... Very interesting!

I wonder how much of this is going on that isn't getting reported? I have a feeling that stories like this are kind of like cockroaches, for everyone that you see, there are a hundred in the baseboards.

Good catch, Lane!

DD1 said that if the flow stops, the oil will gel. It has to be heated to flow. So lets hope they can get it flowing again.

Excellent work Lane.

Thanks

People, let's get straight here semantically speaking. The author should not have titled the article as he/she did. The pipelines in question are known as "products pipelines" in the industry, as they carry only petroleum products. There is no, i repeat no oil flowing through the pipes mentioned in this article. All East Coast refineries are served by Waterborne crude, meaning crude on boats from other places like SA, Ven and N. Sea. Although Penna. was the birthplace of the crude oil industry, it's been quite a while since those fields produced anything but daisies.

From the article: The interstate oil pipelines that supply Central New York with gasoline, diesel and jet fuel will temporarily shut down at the end of year due to concerns over the Y2K computer bug.

Snip

Again, I am glad to see this. I have been saying for some time that this would be the case. After what happened in Bellingham (which we never found out the computer error nature) there isn't a products line in the country that will want to risk this kind of problem. It's simple horse sense. Now, let me share some other tidbits with you. The API and the oil industry agree that you are going to panic and run us out of product. We don't think this is a maybe, we're counting on it. You should too. I just wouldn't plan any road trips around that time if I were you. Get where you want to be, at least a week or two before the new year.

How will the truckers get around?

Take note of the Mobil spokesperson -Ida Walker. Id a be walking too after the rollover unless I was near a refinery than Id a be running.

Take note of what she says. Mobil is gonna shut down their pipelines for a few hours over the rollover because, "...computer glitches within the [pipeline] system could prevent valves from opening or closing...". Well if Mobil is concerned about these kinda valve factors in a relatively simple system like a pipeline, then what are they gonna do with their high pressure, high temperature, tempramental as hell, refinery conversion units????? Answer: They're gonna shut these down as well for the rollover [wisper, wisper]. And if they're concerned enough to shut refineries down, perhaps y2k isn't the docile non-event that they're leading us to believe.

I also get a kick out of the repeated mention of the Stategic Petro Reserve thats getting spoon fed to the press on every y2k story- like thats even gonna be a factor. It'll take months+Congress to get that crude oil pumping and the concern here is refined products- not crude.

Got length (oil market)?

Yes, they CAN ignore it! I LIVE here, and belive me; NOONE CARES!! There are sales on canned goods and rice all over the place, and no one is buying! I've shown this to my friends and NOT ONE cared!!

Friday night update:

NYMEX crude up 60 cents a barrel flirting with $25 at one point today. NYMEX gasoline and heating oil up 2 cents at one point. Colder weather in next week's forecast. Its just the inception of the pre- rollover price rally.

Got length (oil market)?
