i work for an automotive parts supplier, we make exhaust system parts, our customers sell to the big three and to the japanese automakers.

in order to buy steel to make parts, we require a 12 week forecast from our customers. one of our customers admitted today they're having a y2k foulup, they can't project forecast into the year 2000.

if they don't get it fixed by next week, we go into manual mode.

i'm sure they *thought* they were compliant.

As I posted last week about this happening. This type of problem will begin to crop up more and more. The supply chain starts with the small guy and it will idle millions of people in a short period of time....

Not every division of every company has been considered to be mission critical. Only a few. Many companies are getting ready to jettison entire divisions to protect the bottom line. These new unemployed will meet in the job market with flotsam from entire companies that crashed.

Prepare. It's gonna get real ugly.

I've been saying that the layoffs will happen for months...If you do mostly non mission critical stuff...your job is TOAST. Across many business and Governmental entities, a good rule of thumb is 9%. That is all that will be fixed...no way will organizations spend 10 times more to keep everyone working. Forget about it!!
