The purpose of this item is to objectively demonstrate--for Doubting Pollys--the real life effect of Y2K rollover on common, unremediated computer platforms: "... computer froze up."
BSC Puts Old Computer To Y2K Test - (BIRGMINGHAM) -- Birmingham Southern College put its old mainframe computer to the Y2K test Monday, just before putting it out to pasture. The old Hewlett-Packard 3000 was rolled ahead to the year 2000, and engineers at the college were pleased with the results, at least until the computer froze up. Computer engineer Jerrell Baxter says "Gertrude", as the device is affectionately called, will have a burial at sea. Hewlett Packard will recycle it by using the cases to create coral reef beds off the Florida coast.
