Hi,

People who try to convert their home video's to video-cd often require more bitspace that the white book standard describes. However there are several video-cd 2.0 players that allow a lower audio rate and a somewhat higher video bitrate. I found a desciption of a non standard video-cd that is used for storing home video's(which often do not require stereo CD quality audio) by some company's in Malaysia, they have the following list of additional features :

1246 video, 128 audio 1262 video, 112 audio 1310 video, 64 audio

These setting work correctly for all Panasonic portable video-cd players produced from 1996 and up. I would like to know from people who have other brands/types of video-cd players of these settings work(and DVD players). Any help is welcome.

I make vcds with a bitrate of 2200mbs and audio 128. With this bitrate you can encode only 40 minutes of video+audio per cd. The Sony dvd players 715 and 7700 (these are the european models, but i thik it's the same all over the world) read these vcds withouth any fault. And the quality it's simply stunning, nothing to compare with the standard vcds. All the best, Luigi

What program do you use to burn that with & does it give you an error? I have a panasonic VP-30, will it be able to play it?

I use video-pack 4.0 and encoded the files with XING, PANASONIC and LSX and the sl-vp30 and sl-vp35 (which I both have) play the discs perfectly so you will not have any problems. The described setting work prefectly. If you have any questions about this just let email me.

Hi all,

I've tried the bit rates suggested here (using avi2mpg), but when I try to get VideoPak 4.0 to burn it, it simply comes up with error boxes (lots of them - one every key frame ?) so I can't actually get anything onto a disk.

How do I stop all these warning messages appearing ? I'm not too worried about not using whitebook files - I simply want to test the VCD/DVD players.

I encoded using Panasonic and Xing both work perfectly. I burned the disc using video-pack. It reports an error after creating the video-cd image but the disc work perfectly..

Just to add my two bits, I use Nero to burn non white book compliant vcds and I get no errors of any kind compiling the layout, burning the cd, or playing it in my Sony DVP-500D. I also found that Nero is a lot more stable than piece of crap Adaptec. I have VideoPack 4, but it doesn't recognize my burner. The decision for which software to use has been made for me. Thank you to all you guys for this thread of messages. I never knew I could do things this way with much better quality. I don't even bother to decrease the audio bitrate. I just calculate the maximum video bitrate I can use given the duration of my source video and encode that.

Is this realy true? Can you really encode at a much higher bit rate and make a VideoCD that will play back on Sony DVD players?

I have a high end S7000.. will it work on that? I have nero but do not have Video Pack 4. I also have the panasonic encoder, but it won't let you change the bit rates when you select video CD.

Can someone please describe the process and settings in detail.

I have been trying like crazy to get better quality out of VCD to no avail.

yes .. it even works at 3200kbs. That's it! if you go over that, the player drops frames & sound rapidly! I tested it with my Sony 715!

Any of you guys using a hardware dvd encoder on your PC, just wonder if this is possible on a PC, I cannot do it on the set top so the PC is the next chioce?

RealMagic Hollywood Plus decoder for example.
