I still miss Chris Farley. I loved the sketch of him and Nancy Kerrigan ice skating, and when I get off on a complaint rant and catch myself, I sometimes add that I live in a van down by the river to the end. I quote Jack Handey now and then, but there are so many people who just don't get it, and then I get 'that look'. I also sound like Goat Boy sometimes, but only when I trip over my own tongue.

I also really like their fake commercials. Does anyone remember "Adobe", the car made of mud? How about the cream that removes those unsightly extra fingers? And Big Red, that fun for the whole family toy that sprays red liquid all over the room? Bathroom monkey, scrubs your toilet, sink and tub till they gleam, and when he gives out you just toss him and get a new one!

I loved the sketch with Patrick Swayze and (I think) Victoria Jackson doing "Ghost", where he was in the room but she couldn't see him, and she was pulling lint out of her belly button, picking her nose, chewing her toenails and stuff. It cracked me up because he was all, "Oh gross! Molly, stop that! I can't believe you just did that!" And of, course, when he and Chris Farley were competing for the Chippendales - hilarious!

I like the Spartan Spirit skits, and I always laughed at Sprockets. John Travolta played a great Barbra Streisand once, and Kevin Spacey did a bunch of audition impersonations of Walter Matthau as Ben Kenobi, and Christopher Walken and a bunch of other people. But he was incredible, and he can sing! I'm so glad Comedy Central shows reruns of SNL now.

Norm was my favorite Weekend Updater, and I love The Ladies Man. I know people say the truest SNL fans will say Murphy, Ackroyd and Belushi were the best, but I was too young to really get the humor then, and anyway, I wasn't allowed to watch the show - too risque. So, my faves are the newer ones.

Good question, Pamie. You cheered up my day reminiscing about some good laughs.

...phil hartman...and pretty much everything he did...but admittedly, i use the word "sassy" to excess because of SNL...

*turns to camera*
i think someone just stepped in a big pile of...sassy!

The absolute funniest sketch I have ever seen in my life was the very first "Motivational Speaker" Chris Farley did.

It was the one with Christina Applegate and David Spade where they play the two teens sitting on the couch getting the drug lecture. I think Kevin Neelan was playing the dad and I can't remember who was playing the mother, but from the beginning of that sketch til the end, ALL of the cast was laughing their asses off and trying to hide it.

The funniest part was when in the middle of his motivational speech, he just flopped himself onto the coffee table, crushed it into peices, and got up and said "Whoopsy". I almost pee'd my pants! The whole cast just couldn't stop laughing. I read in an interview later Chris said that the table flop was improv'd right there. He just thought it would be funny. He was so right!

He will be missed!

Yeah, Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze as Chippendales. Once you've seen it, the image can never leave your head.

Eddie Murphy as "Mr. White"

Bill Murray as the lounge singer singing "Star Wars"

Rosanne Rosannadanna

Rob Lowe doing Arsenio Hall

Dana Carvey as Jimmy Stewart with Deter on Sprockets: "Ow. Why, your monkey bit me!"

Ladies Man

There's so many.

Have to say Dennis Miller was best Weekend Updater, although Spade and MacDonald did well also.

Sadly, I watched it for the first time in a long time the other day. Oh well, they've slumped before and come back.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

My two favorite SNL sketches ever:

1) Dana Carvey (as George Michael) jumping onto Dennis Miller's desk during Weekend Update, gyrating his ass towards the camera and yelling, "Look at my butt, Dennis! It's perfectly round! Scientists use it to calibrate their instruments!", etc. I say "Look at my butt, Dennis!" (in a horrible British accent) so often that my boyfriend, who has never seen this skit, has started saying it, too.

2) A loooong time ago, I remember seeing a skit about two male synchronized swimmers (I don't remember who the actors were)...one was "developmentally challenged" and wore a swim cap and bright orange life vest. One of their routines involved them facing each other, pointing at each other, and saying, "hey, you! I know you! I know you!". This must have made a lasting impression on my tender young consciousness, as I still walk around occasionally saying this to myself.

Oh, and how could I have forgotten about the satirical commericals? I used to long for a "Big Red" spinning viking that shot blood out of his horns....and who didn't wish that *they* had a Happy Fun Ball??

I haven't watched SNL in about 8 years (except re-runs), for what I consider to be very good reasons. Sad.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

The skit where they give Chris Farley Colombian Crystals instead of his regular coffee, and he calls the announcer a son of a bitch and dives across the table at him made me laugh for like fifteen minutes straight. I also liked Chris when he was playing El Nino on Weekend Update ("I am El Nino! All other storms must bow down before me! In English my name means... uh.... the Nino!")

I also love the sexual innuendo couple ("You wanna mount this beaver?" "I'm gonna mount that beaver!" "Mount this beaver!" "You want me to mount that beaver????!!").

I remember watching the premiere of SNL back in 1975, when we lived in Hawaii...so I guess it was Saturday Night Live Delayed By Six Hours. Wasn't George Carlin the first host? I remember that when the show first aired that ABC had a shit-fit because Howard Cosell had a show called Saturday Night Live.

Many favorite memories include:

--Eddie Murphy doing Buckwheat Sings (Fee Tines a Nady, Wookin Pa Nub)

--Chevy Chase doing Gerald Ford and saying "Roll Over, Liberty"

--The first-ever sketch with John Belushi and Michael O'Donoghue. Belushi was a foreigner taking English lessons, and I remember him saying something like "i want to live with wolverines"

--Gilda Radner as Roseanne Roseannadanna describing her meeting with Walter Cronkite wherein she shifted in her chair, and the leg of the chair makes a noise that sounds like an anally based gaseous social indiscretion, and she tries to convince Cronkite that it was the chair and not her

--"JANE you IGNORANT SLUT!!!"

--Bass-0-Matic with Dan Aykroyd. Still brings back the bitter taste of pre-puke bile in the back of my throat

--"I'm Gumby, Dammit!!" An Eddie Murphy classic moment.

--"Lord and Lady Douchebag". That whole sketch KILLS me. I sit here laughing remembering the droll Buck Henry as he announced the party guests.

--"Save the liver!!!" Aykroyd doing Julia Child as she spurts blood having severed an artery while carving a turkey.

--Phil Hartman doing the weightlifter guy, and his arms come off and we see the bloody sockets, with the arms remaining on the bar. EWWW!!

I know that as soon as i hit "submit" many other memories will come flooding back. Thanks for the memories, SNL...

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

Carolyn--I think that synch swimmer skit was with Harry Shearer (bass player from Spinal Tap, also does voices on the Simpsons) and Christopher Guest (Nigel from Spinal Tap), but I could be wrong--that WAS a long time ago. Was Martin Short in there too? Now I'm getting fuzzy...

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

Okay, someone help me out. I remember seeing this episode/fake commercial and I cannot for the life of me remember if it was from SNL.

It was a fake car commercial deemed the "Mercury Mistress" - it was sick as much as it was funny. The trunk key hole was a - uh..ahem...vagina....of sorts, and the guy who owned the car would hump the rear end of the car, thus giving him an alternative to his everyday, boring, repetitive wife - and this car would make "cheating" okay, because it was his very own "mistress" by Mercury. He'd get the urge and stop the car, get out, and hump the car in the pouring rain. Or he'd excuses himself from an important dinner with clients at a restaurant, makes his way outside, takes a look around to make sure no one was watching, and has a round with the "Mercury Mistress". It was one of the funniest fake commercials I've seen. Perverted, yes, but funny as hell.

Anyone else remember this?

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I loved Phil Hartman as Jesus. More recently I liked Ray Romano playing a pimp who specializes in overweight prostitues, "I supersize my bitches!" I loved the sketch that had Jim Carrey promoting the use of a drug (speed?) to lose weight with the voice over, "Ride the snake!" and Will Ferrel stands up and talks about his expereince with the drug, "I am the DEVIL!" Very humorous. Let's see... I loved "Handsome Man" with Alec Baldwin and Mike Myers. I love the Ladies Man. What else? I loved Belushi as the Samurai. And finally, the sketch where Adam Sandler was learning how to grind pepper over people's salads, Adam Sandler: Fresh-a Peppah? Chris Farley: On my chocolate mousse? Too funny!

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

The sychronized swimming sketch was the best! Harry Shearer and Martin Short were the swimmers (Martin Short was the one who couldn't swim so he had to wear a life vest). And Christopher Guest was their choreographer. That skit rocks so hard. And, Carolyn, you're not alone -- I still find myself saying, "Hey, I know you. I know you."

But my favorite has to be the celebrity Jeopardy! skits with Will Farrell as Alex Trebeck and the guy who used to do President Clinton as Sean Connery. The best one of those had David Duchovney (sp?) playing Jeff Goldblum and his impersonation was so dead on that I was dying laughing. Any time my boyfriend wants to reduce me to helpless giggles, he just has to say, "Then the day is mine, Trebeck!" in a pseudo-Scottish accent and I'm done for!

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I do remember the mistress car. I thought it was hysterical.

I also loved the Sigourney Weaver episode with "Chopping Broccoli" and "Alienseses." Last week I saw the Sarah Michelle Gellar episode with the fighting family. "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!" Cracks me up.

The steroid olympics was the first time my mom noticed my sense of humor that was "just like your father's."

And it's "It's a perfect circle! I mean look at it!"

I love Mary Catherine Gallagher. I'm just mad she did it first. Remember Mike Meyers' character with the helmet and how he was tied to the jungle gym and would freak out when someone gave him chocolate? So friggin' funny.

The show with Kevin Spacey with the Star Wars audition tapes. Rocked my world.

I just saw a SNL commercial for a car for crazy people. That was a good one. The love toilet for the people who spend every minute together.

Chris Kattan's Kerry Strug. "I said a little prayer."

And come on, we all loved Wayne's World the first three times.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

mc, you're right the swimming sketch did have Harry Shearer, Chris Guest and Martin Short. My husband and I will stop and point at each other and say, "Hey you, I know you, I know you!" while waiting in lines and such. I loved that sketch.

Does anyone remember the Schlitz Gay Beer ad with Farley and I think Sandler or Spade? They're sitting around a pool all bored when they crack open a Schlitz and all of a sudden all of these buff gay guys in speedos are walking around. Farley and the other guy look at a guy's butt and start hi-fiving! Okay, I'll stop now. :p

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

"Jane, you ignorant slut" is the very best, I think, but the first sketch I thought of was Victoria Jackson as Mrs. Santa Claus: "I dyed my hair, I lost some weight, I could make you feel really great ..." I loved Victoria Jackson. I think she was my favorite cast member ever.

It's funny that no one is mentioning the recurring skits like Church Lady, the "You Rook Marverous" guy, etc. Those got annoying pretty quickly.

I did like Velvet Jones, that freaky dancing guy that Martin Short used to do, and anything done by Jane Curtain. Funny that I couldn't stand her on Third Rock or Kate & Ally; she was hilarious on SNL.

Oh, yeah, and "Dysfunctional Family Christmas" -- but only for the Dana Carvey song: "Leave me alone, please go away ..." I still sing that every Christmas.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

Tops on my list are

--"We are two wild and crazy guys" - The Swinging Czech Brothers (Steve Martin and Dan Akroyd - That one always cracks me up... --For some reason, at least once a month, "Could it be, ummm, *cocked eyebrow* SATAN???" pops into conversation between me and my husband! The Church Lady was great.

--Mike Meyers as Simon! "Hello, my name is Simon. And I like to do drawarings!" "Are you looking at my bum??" - and yes I still like Wayne and Garth.

--I loved the list of warnings on the Happy Fun Ball commercial - "Do not taunt happy fun ball. Happy Fun Ball is made from an unknown substance that fell from the sky yadda yadda yadda...

--Any of Adam Sandler's Holiday Songs for the Weekend Update. Especially Thanksgiving... "Turkey for the girls and turkey for the boys - My favorite kind of pants are corduroys"

I know there are tons more - what a great post today. Wish we got Comedy Central just so I could see the re-runs.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I knew I'd think of more:

Jerry Seinfeld's turn as "Elijah the Prophet"

"New...Shimmer...It's a floor wax, it's a dessert topping!"

Chris Guest and Billy Crystal (does anyone still remember that Crystal was even ON the show as a regular??) doing the "I Hate When That Happens" guys. Most of their stuff was improv'd. Classic.

One word: Toonces.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I know I'm dating myself but I've gotta put a plug in for the originals and still the greatest - Gilda Radnor, Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, and John Belushi. The always- confused Roseanne Rosannadanna was the best:("Whats all this I hear about Free Soviet Jewelry? The Soviets should have to pay for their jewelry just like everybody else". "It's 'Jewry', Rosanne, 'Free Soviet Jewry'". "Oh... never mind"). Chevy Chase invented the Weekend Update and is still the standard. Jane Curtin was always great as the snooty sorority sister who tried to bring a little decorum to the lunatic asylum. One skit I'll always remember was the Loud Family where every talked at the top of their lungs ("HERE YA WANT SOME OF THIS POT"). I remember laughing so hard I had to think of something tragic so I could catch my breath.

Of all the characters and all the skits over the years, Gilda, in my opinion, was the best. Funny how the best of the lot died young.

Rarely watch SNL anymore (on too late) but my daughter does.

Thanks for the chance to reminisce. Luv yer jernal.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I remember when I was really young, my mom and I would watch Gilda Radner do Rosanne Rosannadanna. My mom loved her. She cried when she died.

I loved anything with Eddie Murphy. Especially Buckwheat, and James Brown, "in the hot tub!"

The only SNL skit that I find myself still quoting, is the one with David Spade and I think Helen Hunt where they are the airline steward and stewardess. It was so funny. I catch myself on the phone sometimes saying. "uh-huh, ok, bye bye." "you have a problem? no one cares. bye bye"

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I agree with so much of the above - occasionaly catch a re-run on comedy central - but never watch the new ones - maybe i should give it a try.

and let's not forget.... LAND SHARK

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

Damn it, I knew I'd remember more:

-- The Sweeney sisters. Remember them? The lounge singers? I think everyone else hated those characters, but I thought they were hilarious. One of my favorites.

-- Paul Simon in hell (i.e., an elevator playing Muzak versions of Simon and Garfunkel songs for eternity). Totally inspired and utterly hilarious.

-- Ah, damn it, I knew I'd forget the next one before I got around to typing it up.

-- Oh, yeah, David Spade as the receptionist. "And you are ...?"

I'd forgotten that SNL used to be funny sometimes. Now we watch Mad TV instead.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

My favorite sketches were the "Hurlihy Boy" services. The "Deep Thoughts" announcer would announce, "The Hurlihy Dog Sitting Services," and the camera would go to Adam Sandler and Chris Farley in denim overalls. Adam Sandler would stand there, politely asking to walk your dog, not unlike a 6 year old boy. Then the camera would ease over to Chris Farley, who would start screaming and ranting, "LET THE BOY WALK YOUR DOG!" Then the camera would keep moving back to Sandler, as the Hurlihy boy, asking for another privilege, logically giving his reasons you should let him bathe your dog.. The camera would move back to Farley, who would scream, "LET THE BOY BATH YOUR DOG!" As the Hurlihy boy kept asking for more privileges, Farley would scream to give the boy the new privilege, until he was screaming, "LET THE BOY MARRY YOUR DOG!"

The only other "Hurlihy Boy" sketch I saw was the "Hurlihy Grandmother Sitting Services." The progression went something like "Let the boy watch your grandmother!" to "Let the boy shave your grandmother!" to "Let the boy bathe your grandmother!" and on and on, each time the Hurlihy boy making a case to "marry your grandmother," and "be your grandmother."

My next favorite was Adam Sandler reporting the news as Opera Man.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

The Schlitz Gay was also Farley and Sandler.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

My favorite was the one where Eddie Murphy was playing Buckwheat and they did a break in, like a news break in, to annouce he'd been shot. Then they showed the footage and I can't really remember what he said but it was in slow motion and I was rolling on the floor!

Another was when Eddie played James Brown... "OWWW!! Too hot in the hot tub!"

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

Murphy.....

I totally forgot when Buckwheat got shot. I am laughing right now just thinking about it.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

OH yeah! And.. and.. "Mr. No Depth Perception"! And what was it, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood (Can you say "Bastard"? Good! I knew you could!) And pretty much anything Dana Carvey did... Massive Headwound Harry, Churchlady, Bush, Jimmy Stewart, Garth...

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

Oh! and I remember the one Christipher Walken episode, where in the opening monologue, he breaks into "Let's Face The Music And Dance." (Irving Berlin?) He starts singing and dancing spontaneously with all of the female cast members. Jan Hooks still has a bathrobe and a towel on her head, Walken begs her to dance, and she resists until she looks in the camera and smiles, "Alright!"

Then they dance behind stage, where Lorne Michaels is on the phone, hangs up, says, "jan?" and Hooks bows her head and walks off in shame. Then Walken starts begging Michaels to dance with him, until, Michaels gives in, and they both start singing and dancing the rest of the song.

Ok, that's really my favorite sketch, because it was both funny and beautiful. How many things in life can you say that about?

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

The Tom Hanks episodes were great too. Mr. Short Term Memory, with his "Somebody's serving me already chewed food!" and when he was "such a nice guy" that he did all those things to thank the cast and crew for being so great the whole week.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I can't believe no one's mentioned 'Mister Robinson's Neighborhood'.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

Oh! Does anyone remember Sting as Billy Idol? Fighting with Phil Hartman as Frank Sinatra? "I got chunks of guys like you in my STOOL!" Ok, that's my favorite sketch.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

How bout when Shatner was on and they spoofed "Wrath of Khan" like it was a floating resteraunt. Somebody started choking on some food and the Bones character said "My god Jim, I'm a doctor not a ... oh..."

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

Oh! Does anyone remember "cut scenes" from Tom Hanks's "Big," where he's beating up the other kids on the playground? Sandler's Billy Madison made me think they borrowed from that sketch, maybe even having the same writers involved.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

i don't usually watch snl, but there were only two times in my life where i nearly pissed my pants because something really really really funny happened on tv, and both of them were on snl: 1) mr. peepers jumping on the "doctor" (the cheerleader guy) and sucking on his nose, and 2) a fuzzy memory where this guy was talking about how "when i was a little kid, i loved to stick my head out the car window. until one day...." and then it showed the kid with his head out the car window and the car going down a narrow two way road, and coming towards his car was another car with a dog sticking it's head out the window. then when the two cars passed eachother there was a "BONK" and the dog's head went flying through the air while the kid was rubbing his head saying "ow"

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

My absolute favourite was The Hannukah Song!

"Paul Newman's half Jewish and Goldie Hawn's half, too Put them together, What a fine looking Jew!"

Oh, and when Aerosmith visited Wayne's World.

Cara

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I can't believe only ONE person mentioned Happy Fun Ball!! That was the BEST!

Do *not* taunt happy fun ball!

And I agree with someone about the David Spade receptionist thing. I thought it was especially funny when it was Jesus in the waiting room.

I, too, like any skit with Tom Hanks (of course, he's my favorite), namely the 7th-time-hosting skit. When Paul Simon and Bill Murray came and got him and took him to the special "7 timers" room. I don't remember any other particulars, cuz it was a REALLY REALLY long time ago. I, too, stopped watching a while back.

(And I can't believe no one's mentioned the Copy Guy. Not that *I* find him that funny, but he was SO damn popular.)

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

oh my god -- I've been laughing so hard!

Any show with Christopher Walken - he is so damn funny! My husband and I still do "Champan-ya" on a regular basis.

Lately, we have been in public somewhere and he will say, "Schwords! Trebek!" in that cheesy accent. I'd shoot him the evil look, except I'm laughing too hard.

In any parking lot where we happen to see one: "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!"

"Sassy" is still huge in our office, not uncommon to be yelled at as you walk by someone's door: "Oh! You are so SASSY!"

"Remember the 80's?" Our favourite Goat Boy quote.

Jan Hooks and "Butt-a-fee-o-co" as classic theatre

Garth Brooks as the French prostitute. (That whole skit cracks me up).

Any Adam Sandler songs...

Todd & Lisa Loopner - NOOGIES!

"Bu-bye" Classic

I'm with you Beth, I LOVE the Sweeney Sisters, especially the Christmas sketch with William Shatner who is marrying one of them. Also, the Dysfunctional Family Christmas, we sing it every Christmas too.

Phil Hartman as Frank Sinatra "ya dumb mick!" "cut it, print it" -- god, I miss him!

Shatner at the Star Trek convention: "Get a life! You -- have you ever kissed a girl?"

Canteen Boy..kind of perverted but funny as anything!

The McLaughlan Group: "WRONG!"

Phil Hartman doing Ed McMahon.

Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer.

"You like-a the juice?"

"GET TO KNOW ME!"

"Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket!"

Okay, I'll stop now...

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

I love Sandler's 'Red Hooded Sweatshirt' I love 'Sprockets' -- Now is the time on Sprockets ven ve dance! I love Dog Show and I love Fun with real audio and Simon and That kid tied to the jungle gym and the fake ads and Jack Handy and the motivational speaker.

I'm very young, give me time.

-- Anonymous, September 24, 1999

you guys! all of this is soo funny, well, not the older stuff, cuz , im ashamed to say, i wasnt even born then, but oh man! shprockets! soo sooo funny! i cant beleive i missed that, and umm.. what about simon? mike myers as a little kid, always in the tub. "hello my name is simon, and i like to do drawrings" man, funny stuff, also its buh- bye, someone ticks me off at work, im like "okay, have a nice day, buh-bye" works everytime. but no one else seconded my mango, whats up with that? comeon its funny, especially the one where they show his family and they're all in those gold sequined shorts and tops, soo soo funny! man, i think mostly the whole thing is funny. wow! good grammer there

-- Anonymous, September 25, 1999

I think that the funniest thing ever on Saturday Night Live is also the funniest thing ever on television, which was Sam Waterstone pitching Old glory insurance against robot attacks.

Absolutely perfect.

I also loved "Oops I Crapped My Pants".

-- Anonymous, September 25, 1999

The Ebony and Ivory skethc?

"You are black and I am white."

"You are blind as a bat and I have sight."

Oh, Phil Hartman and the Anal Retentive Fisherman, basically anything Phil Hartman.

and

"I'm from Jersey.

topless Martha Stewart

-- Anonymous, September 25, 1999

"We're gonna pump YOU up!"

-- Anonymous, September 25, 1999

I've always liked the skit where Kirstie Alley & her husband are in an Italian restaurant & all the waiters are loving on Kirstie, saying "Bellisima" & licking all over her face & one of them ends up humping on her right on the table in front of her husband.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 1999

The Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer! This prompted a former roommate of mine to be nicknamed "2000 Year Old Unfrozen Wurtemburg Man." I laugh out loud when I think of UCL saying to a flight attendant (loaded and cut off from the bar service): "Your bright lights and big silver birds scare me, for I am a simple caveman. Now get me another Dewars and soda, OK sweetheart?"" Man, Phil Hartman could make anything funny.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 1999

Anyone remember the fake commercial "Crystal Gravy" when the whole Crystal Pepsi schpiel was going on? It looked like clear shampoo or something... pretty sick. It wasn't really that funny, but it stuck in my mind for some reason.

Pamie already mentioned it, but I loved the Sarah Michelle Gellar with her family. My mom and I are constantly saying, "I wish you weren't a liar" to each other. On more than one occasion, I've called my father a "big fat turd." I always crack up when the mother says, "I start pottery classes tomorrow" and the daughter immediately responds with "I wish you were dead."

What about Chris Kattan doing "Kippy Strug" - Kerry Strug's brother? That was hysterical. Or Mr. Peepers? When he starts blowing on someone's face and Will Ferrell says, "Mr. Peepers is now in attack mode", I fall on the floor. Every time.

Velvet Jones: "...and that's when I knew I was 'Kicked in the Butt by Love'."

"New Shimmer is a great floor wax!"
"It's a dessert topping, you cow!"

Emily Litella: "What's this I hear about firing the handicapped?! This is a time we should hire them, not fire them! They could be licking stamps, or putting the clothes on Barbie dolls, or putting the little recorded messages in Chatty Cathy dolls... why, they'll have to eat Christmas toast! And whoever heard of Christimas toast? I never in my whole life..."
"Emily, the editorial was about hiring the handicapped. Not 'fire'. Hire."
"Oh. Well. That's different. Nevermind."

"This is the Judy Miller Show, with your host, Judy Miller... who is also a bride!"

"A Mr. Richard Faeter from New Jersey writes, 'Dear Roseanne Rosannadanna, what's this I hear about King Tut? Who is this Tut? What's so special about this Tut? Did you see Tut? Should I see Tut? Did you know that Tut spelled backwards stills spells Tut? Do you think Tut'll ever come to my town?' Mr Faeter... this king's got enough problems being dead. Don't make it worse by havin' him come to New Jersey."

Can you tell I idolize Gilda Radner? I loved everything she did from Jewess Jeans to the Hey, You perfume commercials. The only thing I didn't like of hers was the Candy Slice thing. I didn't really get it.

Anyway...

This is fun.

"Candygram."

One of my favorite newer episodes is the Spartan Cheerleader one with Jim Carrey where he's Lachmeil, the foreign exchange student.

"Alexis! Alexis! This is Lachmeil! He's a foreign exchange student. That means he talks with an accent and he smells funny... he smells bad... he stinks! Okay, call me, bye!"

Another Jim Carrey sketch that's hilarious is where he's the lifeguard of a hot tub. "This area is for lap swimmers only!"

The old commercial where Stevie Wonder is playing tennis with some tennis star (I don't remember who) and they're taking pictures of each other? "So easy... anybody can use it!"

I need to go now. I typed too much. Oops.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 1999

I just remembered that Emily Litella doesn't say, "That's different." She says, "That's lovely." My mistake.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 1999

I can't believe no one mentioned "Mommie Dearest"! I can't believe I didn't mention "Mommie Dearest"! I have that whole sketch memorized...

"Now Christina, when you enter a room, you are in command. When Mommy's in the room, you're second in command. Stun the room, bewitch them with your gaze. Glide... float... twirl... curtsy... why, you clumsy oaf! I could deprive you of every ounce of oxygen!"

"Now come give Mommy a kiss... why are you wearing lipstick, you ignorant little slut!"

My mom's always saying to me before I leave, "Give Mommy a servile hug."

I have to agree with Ms. Andrews on the above characters and quotes... Lovely, darling. I must mention the Spartan cheerleader skits again, being an ex-Spartan Cheerleader myself. Some of the skits reminded me of a few of the girls on the squad. For instance, when Alexis cuts her hair the same as Ariana's. Classic. And "Who's that Spartan in my tee-pee?" "It's me!! It's me!!" Chris Kattan playing Mr. Peepers was another favorite of mine. When Sting was hosting, and Mr. Peepers came out to hang all over him, screaming "BAH!!! BAH!!!" SNL was at its best. Molly Shannon plays an awesome Mary Catherine Gallagher... No one can smell armpits like this girl! One of the skits that sticks out in my mind is when Mary Catherine is in a beauty pagent sponsored by Teen Spirit, I think, and she ends up winning against Claudia Schiffer, but only because Claudia used the word "whore" in the answer to her final question. And... last but not least, the skit in which Chris Kattan plays Mango, a male stripper that everyone is infatuated with kicks ass. The best one was when David Spade came to the club as "Kiwi-the SENSATION!" To this day, I still drive my friends nuts saying,"You cannot have tha MANGO!" then smacking my bum. This earned me the nickname "Mango" by several of my friends. I'm sure I'm leaving out some good ones, but I'm sure I'll be back with more!

My all-time favorite sketch is from the late seventies. Steve Martin, wearing a VERY loud Hawaiian shirt, is walking across the stage, then stops and stares off into the distance.

"What the hell is that?" He squints, cocks his head, looks closer. "What the hell *is* that?"

This goes on for several minutes:

"Oh, I know what the hell that is--*what* the hell is that? I don't know *what* the hell that is."

He calls a dopey Bill Murray over. "What the hell is that?"

"Wu-u-ul,*I* know what the hell that is." He shakes his head. "What the hell is that?"

I love that sketch, and occasionally manage to catch it in reruns. Then I turn the TV up, call everybody into the room and make them watch it with me.

OHMIGAWD!!! Jim Belushi doing Joe Cocker....aw jeez!

-- Anonymous, September 26, 1999

John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd doing a Blues Brothers song dressed as the Killer Bees.

Dan Ackroyd saying "Jane, you ignorant slut!"

John Belushi as Joe Cocker when Joe Cocker was the musical guest.

Gilda Radner as Patty Smith and Bill Murray as the Coke Dealer.

"Hambooger! Pepsi! Pepsi! No Coke, Pepsi!"

Joe Piscopo as Sinatra singing "Under My Thumb"

Eddie Murphy as Velvet Jones selling his "So you wanna be a Ho" kits.

The Bass-O-Matic.

Dan Ackroyd as Julia Child slicing an artery and passing out from all the blood.

THe absolutely funniest is Tom Hanks and his "Short-term Memory Guy"

MANGO! :)

I've always been fond of the fake commerials. There was an ad campaign for camera's (Nikon I think). Which had a photograher taking pictures of a celebrity, then had the celebrity take pictures of the photographer. They spoofed it with Stevie Wonder and Rich Hall as a tennis star. Stevie took pictures of the tennis star, just a foot or the sky, then Rich took pictures of Stevie trying to play tennis. It was a riot.

i've known and liked every single one of these, really the only one i liked that i remember that no one mentioned was the ad for "Bad Idea Jeans"

But my favorite all time "Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball"

-- Anonymous, September 27, 1999

christopher walken doing the dead zone shtick, but he could only see in the future for trivial things, like "tomorrow you will be very cold, yuo'll wish you wore a a jacket"
anything with phil hartman, when they did the tribute to him last night, i was bawling
when paul simon and jan hooks are standing in line to see a movie and paul remembers everyone ( where people were standing in concerts, a person who turned in bridge under troubled water because there was a scratch on side two) and then when art garfunkel sees him and says hi, paul has no idea who he is
steve martins opening monologue when he and the entire cast break into a musical number about how the show wont suck tonight
Nat X
when eddie murphy was a talent agent and had to show stevie wonder how to "do" stevie wonder, " no thats not it, you have to move your headback and forth more."
tommy flannagan, yeah .. thats the ticket
sooooo many more than i have time to mention.

I love the David Spade "and you are.." "this is regarding..." ones......too funny. The one with Phil Hartman as Jesus was the best.

I loved loved loved Kevin Bacon as Vanilla Ice, too.

-- Anonymous, September 27, 1999

I also loved the Bill Murray/Steve Martin "What the hell is that?" sketch. "Hey kid! Don't put your lips on it!" "Well, whatever it is, get a picture of me with it."

So who saw the show? Was it just me or did Bill Murray say the F-word in the opening number? Regardless, it had me laughing out loud, something that out of the newest cast, only Mr. Peepers has had me doing. The bit with Christopher Walken almost had me piss my pants- "I was wondering, how much of your performance is on the spot, make-em-ups, you know, improv? They let me do whatever I want"

I almost cried during the Phil Hartman tribute. That man was a comedy god.

i have so many faves, but they have really all been mentioned... i won't bore you with them, but i *will* say that i agree with maggie on the crystal gravy thing. i must have been only 11 or something when that one was shown and it has stuck in my head for YEARS. bizarre, no? why would i remember that??? oh, well. maybe it was because it was so damn gross.

My favorite SNL charactermight just have to be Jim Carrey's over-the- top Lifeguard character. I cracked up so bad seeing Will Ferrell screaming that he didn't need to be rescued. He had this geniune look of terror on his face. Classic.

The best scene would have to be Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker. Chris Farley will always be missed. I always think of "government cheese" and "well, la-de-fricken'-DA!"

I'm nostalgic for Eddie Murphy's Mister Robinson character as well. "Well, boys and girls, today my wife walked out on me. I'm glad the bitch is gone." "My girlfriend left me a surprise today. It was a baby. Today, boys and girls, we're going to learn a new word. Can you say... black market, boys and girls? I thought so."

I quite often say, "buh bye", from the airplane sketch where steward David Spade and stewardess Helen Hunt are seeing their passengers to the door.

My favorite Weekend Update Anchor was definitely Bill Murray. Norm was a close second. I was shocked to see him fired.

Of course I still watch SNL whenever I get a chance. It's better than MadTV any day!

P.S. I watched the SNL 25 years show last night. Two things of note: 1) Billy Crystal killed. Loved seeing him make fun of the celebs, especially David Wells. 2) I was way pissed to see that Soundgarden did not make the clips of the 90's music segment. At least Chris Cornell is getting his respect NOW.

-- Anonymous, September 28, 1999

Norm MacDonald was fired from SNL? Can someone fill me in? I've been media disengaged over the last few years.

What do any of you Beastie Boys fans make of them backing up Elvis Costello on Radio, Radio? (As an EC fan, I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Mike Meyers must be a fan or something.)

-- Anonymous, September 28, 1999

For all you SNL fans...check out the website that NBC shamelessly hyped during Sunday night's special...

http://www.snl25.com

It is EXCELLENT! Lots of clips and memories!

Buh-bye.

Can't remember the exact sketches, but some favorite scenes were: Eddie Murphy as a prison inmate/poet - "Kill my landlord, kill my landlord, C - I - L my landlord." And a line from one of his haiku poems - "Barking dog, do he bite?" Every time I hear a barking dog I think of that line.

Eddie Murphy possibly doing his Velvet Jones character, doing a t.v. commercial for some seedy bar. "Tuesday night is ladies night - all naked women drink free."(or something like that)

Phil Hartman as Sinatra on a talk show format with Jan Hooks as Sinead O'Connor, referring to her as "Sine-Aid", "Sinbad", "Cue-ball".

"The Joe Pesci Show" when Alec Baldwin did a perfect Robert DeNiro impression.

"Real Stories of the Arkansas Highway Patrol" - a domestic dispute with Bill Clinton as the abused spouse.

Chris Farley falling on anything, most characters played by Phil Hartman (Sinatra, Ed McMahn (sp?), Frankenstein), Dana Carvey as Ross Perot, David Spade's "Hollywood Minute", Dennis Miller & Norm McDonald on Weekend Update. Lots more, but that's all I can think of right now.

-- Anonymous, September 28, 1999

My favorite had to be the Phil Hartman Frank Sinatra talk show. "Next question: The Bald Chick: Whats with her head?" Then Mike Myers as Steve getting whupped by Sting/Billy Idol. . . Pretty much anything Phil Hartman did, really. Eddie Murphy as Velvet Jones, "Candygram!!" Even though I dont like the show now and dont watch, I love the reruns from the mid-90's or so. . .

Absolutely, the "Omen" parody, titled "The Ointment." Belushi riding his teeny little trike around, and Buck Henry looking for the Mark of the Beast on his forehead -- "It's OK! It just says 999."

Buck Henry again, as the perverted babysitter.

Phil Hartman as the deluded film star. "The reviews say you stink!" "Come on, just give it to me straight ..."

The Gilda Radner sketch where she's a little girl at bedtime and keeps finding scarier and scarier things in her room -- gypsies under the bed, an axe-murderer in the closet -- and her dad keeps getting mad at her because there are rational explanations for all of them. That actually creeped me out at the time.

Definitely the liar guy. "My wife, Morgan Fairchild -- WHO I've seen NAKED --"

Carvey as Bush or the Church Lady or Lothar of the Hill People, or pretty much anything.

Stuart Smalley.

Christopher Walken as Dracula, trying to ascertain if his potential victims are high-risk for AIDS. "Wolves, chidren of the night, yeah, yeah -- but tell me: have you ever had sex with a bisexual man?"

-- Anonymous, September 28, 1999

OK, I know I'm a day late and a dollar short here, but I just read through all the skits and have actually been snort-laughing in front of my monitor. God. I'm so glad to see the show is on its way back up again.

A few people mentioned Gilda Radner. I think she was (and still continues to be in spirit) an absolutely phenomenal woman. I was waiting to see someone mention two of my favorite sketches with her. The brownie girl... "No! We must run to France!" No! We must run to Germany! ... man.

OH! And WHO forgot her brilliant performance as the gymnast Nadia Comaneci? HA! I LOVED that sketch.

For all of you Gilda lovers out there: She put out a video some time ago called "Gilda: Live!" that is absolutely hysterical. You have to hunt for it at the movie rental places, but it's totally worth the search. She opens with this song called "Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals"...For real. It's funny stuff.

-- Anonymous, September 29, 1999

Katherine,

I just wanted to second that. That was so funny!

The "Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals" song is still stcuk in my head. I saw it when I was 12 I think. From 17yrs ago I remember...

The animals, the animals, let's talk dirty to the animals

F%#@ you Mr. Bunny

Eat S&*# mr frog

And for you Mr. Chicken you can suck my d@%* and give me chicken pox

repeat chorus

I still catch myself singing that to this day, and of course Candy Slice was hilarious!

Do you remember the Sacharrin (sp?) song. I'd rather be skinny and have cancer!

Many funny memories. The parts of the anniversary episode I saw were great, for the best-of-the-best factor, the way all the really classic bits were condensed, and the chaff was separated out.

BUT! The last full, solid, funny-up-to-the-traditionally-dodgy-last-half- hour episode I can recall: Alec Baldwin is the host. Late '89, or early '90.

"Greenhilly." nuff said.

The entire sketch with Jan Hooks as a waitress in a truck stop, and Baldwin cruises in for breakfast: "You decided what you want?" "I made up my mind when I was twelve." "You want pie with that?" "'Shouldn't give away your pie with breakfast, makes you look *cheap*." One of the most bizarre and surreal episodes I can recall from the show's history up to that point. That's about where I checked out, as a regular viewer...haven't been back to SNL much since (here'n there, this'n that), but I do recall the Rob Lowe guest appearance on Sprockets, doing "The Trout" as one of the funniest of a long line of funny Sprockets installments.

I could go on, but this was the one instance of the show that had been missed, as I recall it, from the responses above...

peace,

b

I woke up in the middle of the night remembering this sketch and I don't think it's been mentioned: Jan Brady defects to the Partridge Family ("All I Ever Hear About is Marcia, Marcia, MARCIA!"), culminating in a battle of the bands and the families slinging insults at one another.

Things get really ugly when Jan discovers the Partridges don't even play their own instruments.

Best parts:

Partridge to Brady insult: "Well, you're all half-adopted."

Vice versa: "Well, you don't have a dad."

At that point, Chris Farley, as Rueban Kincaid says, "I'll show you who's Daddy!" and takes whoever is playing Shirley Jones in his arms, dips her and gives her a big, messy kiss.

This was just too classic. Susan Dey played herself, Dana Carvey was David Cassidy and Melanie Hutsel (sp?) played Jan, as she was born to do. Adam Sandler was Peter Brady, complete with cracking voice. I taped this scene on the rerun and watched it a lot that year...it just made me laugh hysterically.

-they NEVER show this episode again, because the host went a wee too far methinks, but on the show that martin lawrence hosted, he and chris farley did the motivational speaker routine. it was a parody of the "scared straight" program where schools take their troubled kids to a local prison and the inmates put on a spiel about how they ended up there. blah blah blah. anyway, martin was one of the inmates, and he and farley kept saying stuff like, (martin) "yo. you a real pretty boy. yeah. tell you what i'm gonna do. i'm gonna make you into my little two cigarette biiiiiiiiiitch. yeeeeah. how'd you like that?" (farley- yelling at the top of his lungs, of course) "now, if you kids don't straighten out soon your gonna end up in a van down by the river, or end up as this man's little two stoge biiiiiiiitch!" god, it was freakign hilarious. like i said, they'll probably never play it again. too bad.

-from the newer cast: i don't know their names, but two of the new male cast members put on this parody of cheech and chong (they were called "orbit and larry"), except instead of all the jokes being about marijuana, they were about bad experiences on PCP and airplane glue. ("my god! the world is crushing me! oh gooooooood! arrrrrgh! arrrrrgh! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh..........")

-my favorite weekend update host was denis miller. those were definitely his salad days as well (what's with these long distance comercials?).

-what's up with steve martin? that guy should have never quit doing all those drugs.

-gilda radner was a genius. easily the funniest woman SNL (or the world, for that matter) has had, although i think the short chick (the one who does the cheerleader routine) hasn't fully reached her comic zenith.

what about garrett morris singing to the white parol board (in prison) "gonna git me a shotgun and kill all the whities i seeeee..."

"ACTING!"

Does anyone remember a sketch where Chris Farley was doing the weekend report - with Norm, I believe - and for some reason, he was lifted up into the air?
"And, now, I, uh, I. I'm flying."
I work that one into conversation whenever I get the chance.
Not that it happens too often.

-- Anonymous, January 13, 2000

wow.

I am laughing so hard it's not even funny..

I had forgotten about some of this stuff... but some comments, first.

In the "garth brooks as a french whore" skit, the other two french whores were really speaking french. I think, if I remember right, Molly Shannon was saying "I need money. Give me money" over and over again.

Red hooded sweatshirt should be released as a freaking single! "red hooded swea-he-hah-shirt, dipdipdipdip" hehehehehehe this is so much fun!

my cousins actually got into trouble for watching SNL after the fake commercial was shown where the man kisses the dog on the mouth after he swims the length of a pool.. it was for chanel maybe? I forget.. but they weren't allowed to watch after that incident.

I think it was Kevin Nealon who had a shimmery 12" long sequined skirt underneath his suit jacket, shirt and tie, and at the end of one of the "weekend update" skits, he stood up and danced a la Tina Turner. Hilarious.

My sister and I still laugh at Kippy Strug. "you can do it, kippy" how they got kerry to make fun of herself like that, I will never know. well, I know I'd do it, if I were her, so I guess that's not a real question.

The Ladies Man! My sister still says "that's disgusting" in the "ladies man voice" to me from time to time. I love it.

On the Joe Pesci show, when Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro showed up and beat the shit out of the actors playing them.

And Jim Carrey as that guy from "it's a wonderful life" (I can't believe I can't think of his name).. it was freaking hilarious, tho.

okay, I have to stop. this is freaking hilarious, tho. I wish we could call Comedy Central and request certain episodes or certain hosts to be put on *grin*

Three names: Bill Murray. Phil Hartman. Al Franken.

I really liked Stuart Smalley. The one I remember best is when Stuart tried to counsel Mr. and Mrs. John Wayne Bobbit after their news-making incident. Of course, Stuart didn't know what had happened until the wife yells, "I took a knife and cut off his penis!" The shocked smile for the camera that Stuart gives there is priceless. Then he tries to get Mrs. Bobbitt to talk to and "apologize to the penis." Great.

Another one I remember is Kevin Nealon (I think) doing some movie critic TV show and he has on Jeff Daniels. Kevin thinks they're showing clips from all Jeff's movies (Terms of Endearment, etc.), but instead they just show his diarrhea-in-the-bathroom scene from "Dumb and Dumber" over and over again! Jeff gets upset, but Kevin doesn't seem to notice--at one point he asks Jeff, "Do you worry about type- casting?" Hee!

There are a whole lot of things I like Some are:

Celebrity jeopardy. These are great. "The day is moine Trebek!"

Joe Pesci Show: John Goodman as Robert DiNero. "I heard things Joey" . "Hey look, I broke Mr. Hollands Opus!", "We are now going to reinact a scene from the hit movie, Raging Bull. We will substitute the profanity with the word shampoo." "What the shampoo did he just say?" Jim Carey as Jimmy Stewart. "'Cause Im Jimmy friggin' Stewart!"

Happy Fun Ball

Adam Sandler's money saving Halloween cosumes "Look, I'm mr. Pickle Arm! I've got a damn pickle for an arm, so give me some candy!"

Chris Farley as Benette Brower (When he flys into the air): "So I may not 'Let my scabs heal', I may drink maple syrup from the bottle, I may not 'wear deodorant', I may 'sweat profusely', My feet may 'smell beyond comprehension', I may 'eat my dandruff flakes'

Funny Stuff

I have to say that Canteen Boy and Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer are the two best ideas. I used to be a Boy Scout and took that crap all the time, while Phil Hartman was just a comedic genius.

-- Anonymous, September 06, 2001

* Chris Farley - Motivational Speaker with Christina Applegate, David Spade, Phil Hartman. "... eating a steady supply of government cheese... living in a van down by the river". Farley falls on the coffee table. Spade is pissing his pants laughing. I almost had an aneurism from laughing so hard. - Herlihy Boy (with Adam Sandler). High-impact advertising. Farley, "Can we stop this cruel game? For the LOVE OF GOD...." - "I am El Nino, the greatest of all storms... in English I am knows as ... The Nino." - The Chris Farley show with Paul McCartney.

* Wayne's World (Myers and Carvey): - With Madonna (Garth's big unit) - With Aerosmith (Tom Hanks as the roadie, Garth "I think I'm gonna hurl") - Top Ten Babes of All Time (Garth's mom was #5).

* Chris Rock as Nat X: - Mike Tyson: "Sit your convicted-felon ass down." And "I'll beat your ass so bad you'll be the only person in heaven in a wheelchair." - Stephen Segal as Andrew Dice Clay: "There once was a man named Dice... bla-bla-bla, bla-bla-bla, my big black foot up your ass!" I almost went unconscious on that one.

* Mike Myers as Phillip, the hyperglycemic-hypo[something or other] with Nicole Kidman, where he's harnessed to a play corral and calls Nicole "the devil" when she offers him chocolate.

* Sprockets: Deiter (Mike Myers) holds a panel on "your idea of a perfect date." Phil Hartman is a recently released German ex-con with lipstick all over his face -- "First, I would push you to the ground and piss on your chest shouting, 'House on fire! House on fire!' ..... and you'd wake up in the morning with a size 7 poop shoot."

* Kevin Nelon with the weekend update... practically every week was a killer. Fondest memory was when David Spade did a commentary on the senseless killing of Kelly the Elephant (she went on a rampage with 5 kids on her back). He talked about how he didn't need a gun, 'cause he had "these guns, Kevin" (pointing to his scrawny arms), giving the elephant a suplex. I just about died.

* Any skit with Will Ferrell imitating Harry Cary. The one where he asks Norm "HEY, NORM?! Would You Eat the Moon If It Were Made Of Ribs? ... Don't jerk me around Norm! It's a simple question." Or when he asks Colin Quinn, "HEY! If You Were a Hot Dog, and You Were Starving, Would You Eat Yourself?" Will rox.

* Dominican Lou. When Norm talks about how Deep Blue beat Kasparaov at chess, Dominican Lou figures he can get Deep Blue and use it to defeat Felix, his neighbor, at dominos. "Aah bee' he'en Norm, I bee' he'en." (Beat him). "It's about the moucheen, Felix versus the moucheen."

* Tim Meadows as Leon Phelps, The Ladies Man. There was one skit where he was trying to give his "post-love sweet talk" -- "Baby, I was good wasn't I? I mean, I was fine."

* The skit where the game show boys (George Wendt, Chris Farley, Mike Meyers, Kevin Nelon) are in a bar eating polish sausage. Farley starts to have a heart attack... The boys revive him....

* Commercials: Happy Fun Ball, Three-legged jeans, The Love Toilet, Jiffy-pop Airbag.

* And finally... "Jane, you ignorant slut!" That has to be the funniest one-liner ever in the history of late night comedy, perhaps comedy itself.

i just started watching snl this year, but i like jarret's room w/ jimmy fallon and haratio sans. that skit is hillarious, i also like wake up wakefield, and weekend update
