New to the world of Digital Cameras !

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hi - I have 2 questions, but since I'm new to the world of digital cameras, I don't know it it's a good question or a bad one ! Here goes: I've ordered an Oly D-400 (which I haven't even gotten yet)with the standard 8 meg card, and an additional 16 meg card. I want to know if the additional 16 meg card is put into the camera INSTEAD of the 8 meg card, or IN ADDITION to the 8 meg card (giving a total of 24 meg on board) ? Also, are memory cards standard sized and interchangable between different manufacturers, or must I buy only Oly brand memory ?

Thanks for any info you can render !

Jim,

I don't own a similar camera to yours, but I would say that its a 100% certaintly that it has only one slot, so you will have to remove one memory card and replace it with another when the first one is full. When they are both full you will have to download the photos to a computer.

There are about six different types of memory cards on the market now and your camera will probably accept only one type; however, it will probably be available from a number of manufacturers.

To learn more about the above and much other stuff about digicams, visit Dennis Curtin's site at http://www.shortcourses.com/ and read his "The Foundation of Digital Imaging."

The only difference between Oly and other cards is that Oly writes some code to their products that enables the "panorama" mode in the camera. Other cards don't have this code, and so won't provide that one function. (Apparently though, the Rio program "Dreaming of Brazil" will let you copy the code from one card to the other, letting you transfer this capability to non-Oly cards.) And yes, you only have one slot, so it's either/or. You can swa the cards on the fly though, so another way of looking at it is that you have a total of 24 meg you can fill up before needing to dump the data to your computer. (Eg, bring both cards along for a day's shooting, switch after you've filled the first one.)
