Helen, I'd just as soon not give out my e-mail, lets talk soybeans here.

We can talk here. My email is real though. We want to store soybeans that are fit for humans to eat -- no or low pesticides. I'm afraid of the feedstore variety.

Some may consider me paranoid, I call it precautious. We got our soybeans from the farm the day after harvest. The soybeans there are for feeding pigs. The farmer thought we were weird to want to eat them. They were going into storage in bins and barn lofts. The barn we visited has birds and probably mice, but so does where wheat is stored. You have heard how so many parts per million of mice droppings is allowed in your wheat? They were not organically grown. But after harvest, nothing was to be put on them. So to buy from feed store, which I would have no problem with, you would just wash and sort good. Ours has a lot of chaff in with it. I got excellent soybean cookbooks from Nebraska Soybean Board 1-800-852- BEAN and Indiana Soybean Board 1-800-TALKSOY. Ground beans are excellent sorce of protien added to baked good. You can buy soy flour, but it is just ground beans. I found the directions for making tofu also.

Thank you for the info. I guess we get whatever pesticides in wheat flour anyway. I can dry the beans on my roof after washing.

Don't wash till ready to use. I have had mine stored since last fall just as we got them from the field. The bean comes out of a shell anyway. The shell may have residues. The bean inside may not. I wash most everything with my Shaklee Basice H anyway. I even did the meat before we decided to go vegetarian. So store dry and wash as needed.

Palavia,I have been very satisfied with the soybeans I've purchased from Pleasant Hill Grain. They are chemical free, whole-grain and dried to 10% moisture which assures long storage. Gary Hansen is a nice person to deal with and his prices are reasonable. You can reach him on the web at www.pleasanthillgrain.com. God bless, Mary.
