Ignoring Millennium bug 'puts jobs at risk', By Robert Uhlig, Technology Correspondent JOBS are at risk because a "hard core" of Britain's small companies are failing to take action against the Millennium bug, a Government adviser has warned.

Gwynneth Flower, managing director of Action 2000, said: "This could be the downfall of British business, this lack of perception of the risk shows a worrying short-sightedness." The hotels and restaurants industry was particularly at risk, and Ms Flower said that almost half the firms in that sector were unlikely to be ready in time.

Companies which do not eradicate the bug from their computer systems could find themselves unable to undertake simple operations such as checking customer records, taking orders or sending out goods. They may not even be able to open their premises or operate lighting or heating systems.

Action 2000's latest State of the Nation survey found that about 80,000 medium-sized businesses have not done enough to tackle the computer problem, saying that the stubborn few were foolishly putting their employees' and share- holders' interests at risk.

Ms Flower said: "I have led the business horse to water, I have even kicked it up the backside, but I cannot make it drink." She said people were mistaken if they thought that most Millennium bug problems would strike on the New Year weekend.

"There will be a series of degradations. Problems might not be picked up until the end of the month, the end of the quarter or when end-of-year results are being compiled."
