A Nortel employee passed along this tip to us, and we discovered we were vulnerable to the following problem. Hopefully this tip will be of benefit to others on this forum. I hope I am not wasting space on a topic that has already been covered.

"Quick Fix for Y2K"

"This may save you some big headaches this January. When I received this information and checked my computer, I found it to be set up to fail on 01-01-2000. If you are running Windows, chances are you will encounter this problem. I don't understand why Microsoft set the default this way. I recommend you check and fix your computers.

The problem on 01-01-2000 will be due to a computer clock glitch. Fortunately, a quick fix is provided, should your computer fail the test. I submit the following for your consideration:

> > TEST 1. Double click on "My Computer". 2. Double click on "Control Panel". 3. Double click on "Regional Settings" icon. 4. Click on the "Date" tab at the top of the page. 5. Where it says, "Short Date Sample", look and see if it shows a "two digit" year. Of course it does. That's the default setting for Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT. This date RIGHT HERE is the date that feeds application software and WILL NOT rollover in the year 2000. It will roll over to 00. > > FIX 6. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of "Short Date Style" 7. Select the option mm/dd/yyyy. (Be sure your selection has four Y's, not two) 8. Click "OK".

This is easy enough to fix. However, every single installation of Windows worldwide is defaulted to fail at Y2K rollover."

Sharon - When I checked it was as you said but there is also a "long date" version below this. Is this action appropriate? I'm so 'un'knowledgeble about this. Can anyone else verify this? Brian, Linkmiester, Ray, Chuck D, anyone?

WIN95 is different than 98. No short or long date option. I have an old version from a Developer CD. I will check the 98 systems in house.

HI, I just looked and yes, that is what it was set up for. I never knew this. I am running windows95 too. Surely that is not all I have to do to make my computer compliant. That was very easy. Thanks.

Ok group What is it? Do I do this to my computer or not? This is not clear to me...I thought my computer was compliant...no? Bob says to do this but then Happy Times indicates this is not going to help. What am I to do?
