I finally got back on line!(What a long strange trip it's been).greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread |
About 5 Weeks ago, I had a static discharge in my pc and as a result wiped out my motherboard, mouse, keyboard, and corrupted my hard drive. Since I live in boonieland, I couldn't go to "motherboards are us", and rehab my system.I had to buy a system and wait for it to show up and WAIT, and Wait, and wait....What I found out was you really need hard copy of ALL the important files in your pc. I couldn't access my checkbook, food storage inventory, general inventory, address book, Html preparedness files, etc. Talk about a decapitation. So visualize yourself without your good buddy Joe Computer and get your ducks in a row.Get hard copies, you'll need em.
In the mean time, I put in the garden, worked on the basement, installed a door, resized brass, cast bullets, pruned fruit trees, pulled my snow tires off the van and went to the award banquet at my sons school, and such. Also found how to smoke fish on the volcano stove and make potpie using storage foods.
To Mr Yourdon, sorry to see you fade, it's understandable. BTW, I found my Remote Bar Coding System books relating to the discussion we had on mail processing and as a point of technical information if you'd like to send a neutral snail mail address to my hotmail account I'll burn a copy for you of the system overview. You might find it interesting.

Welcome back nine! We missed your fine contributions.I believe it was BigDog who, not too long ago, was looking for updated info on USPS, Fedex, UPS & the like. Whatcha got for us?
I think many of us could use a respite from the 'net. I wouldn't want a fried 'puter to be the catalyst, though. ;-)
We lose a few, we gain a few...

Where is the tenth finger? Does this have something to do with pruning?

Nine,Welcome back! And don't zap the new computer!
I would add "and backup your disk from time to time", but people seem not to like doing that. :-)

I've tracked down some reference data on "whole house" power protectors - I use these guys, yhey're expensive, but the test results confirm that lower-end (power cord plug-in's) simply don't do the job, and worse, "pass through" the unfiltered surges without sensing they've failed.Quality Power Concepts, 1-800-948-3373, fax 770-784-6004
