I've seen at least one reference in a major publication state that Windows '98 was unequivocally compliant. While these bugs won't affect most users, it does illustrate that total "compliance" is a bitch.

Windows 98 compliant? PLEASE... If it were compliant, why would they want you to set your 100 year window? Y2K Ready (with issues) maybe, but compliant.... far from it.

If Windows 95 was compliant, Billy wouldn't get his upgrade $billion for Windows 98. If Windows 98 was compliant, Billy wouldn't get his upgrade $billion of Windows 2000. Anyone want to take any bets on whether Windows 2000 and Office will handle old dates properly?

As an alternative to Microsoft, Caldera's Linux 2.2 looks very good from where I sit. Finally, Linux with a GUI, an installation wizard, plus Partition Magic (no need to abandon M/S Windows), and WordPerfect8.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Under "Product Summary" -
"Operational Range: 01 Jan 1980 - 31 Dec 2035"

Further down, under "Product Issues - OLE Automation" -
" In Windows 98 the current two digit year cutoff is 2029. This means that two digit years beginning with 30 will be interpreted as being in the 20th century, i.e. 1/1/30 is converted to 1/1/1930, irrespective of the users century window settings in Control Panel\Regional Settings\Date tab."

Tom - the Caldera desktop is nice, and provides some easier setup methods for several things. Trouble most folks have is just that Linux, or any Unix system for that matter, expects you to know what kind of hardware you have. Be prepared to recompile the kernel if you want a sound card, and few things with Win on them (especially Win modems) will work as the Win often means that some of the usual hardware functions have been offloaded onto the operating system.

That aside, XEMACS, and the GNU programming tools may be the very best C++ programming environment available in the world today. And the whole thing is free! Beat that Microsoft!
