I started having that problem alot a few months ago mostly with internet explorer. They just kept getting worse and worse until I couldn't even start desktop without having that pop up. I finally had to get the thing fixed. They had to totally wipe out my hard drive and I lost everything. But it works now. I hope you don't have the same thing happen to you. Try virus scan first and maybe first-aid. Hopefully that will help.

Nice point Shellie. Lon - I assume you are running Win/95. Do you have IE/4.01-SP1 with active desktop? Win/95-B? Give us some more details on your configuration. <:)=

Illegal shutdown on your computer? You may find it annoying. To you it may be serious. AOL's not doing it, nor is any local server that you have. The government is doing it.

Do you mean the little pop-up that says, " you have performed an illegal operation?" This happens to me often, and sometimes I can do the "end task," routine and it's ok. Other times I just have to turn the whole shebang off and reboot. Also, my email took a nasty turn and I can't send, but I can receive.

I do not believe the government has anything to do with this. They aren't concerned with old ladies with 10 cats, 3 dogs, and a cranky husband. It may be my fault as I'm almost computer illiterate. But actually I think it's Bill Gates' fault for cranking out this lousy MicroSuck product.

I sincerely doubt (99.9%) that the "Gary North" post was Gary North. Just my opinion.

If you don't like windoze, go back to DOS.

You have my sympathy - the 4 month old piece of junk I've got crashes more times a week than the old 286 did the entire time I owned it. At this point I think Windows 98 is the problem. It came with it so I'm stuck with it. Then again it could be VIA Voice, or Netscape...

Seriously, have my doubts about 98 (notice how the name shouts its compliance). When Via Voice and Wordpro documents crash and recrash, have found that a disk reorg resolves problem 2 out of 3 times. That's really scarry since this computer is way under used given its power...

Ever sInce I gave up on Wintel / IE and bought a Mac last year, my life has been wonderful. Crashes? What are they? I don't spend my time upgrading and tweeking. Lost weight, got better looking, made more money and moved a step closer to Nirvana...

If you are running Win95, try Defrag utility. I run it once a week or whenever I have an abnormal shutdown (power outage, etc). It rewrites a lot of the pointers. Haven't crashed in over a year.

I must admit that I still run Win/3.11 at home for the above reasons. Stuck with 95 at work but going to NT workstation soon. NT does seem more stable so far. <:)=

I also have experienced many problems with Windows 98. I spent several months tweaking my system in an attempt to solve these problems. I finally have a "reasonably" stable system. I still experience a problem (application crash) about once every other week. This is a big improvement from the daily crashes that I had been experiencing.

Increase the size of your cache and clear it often and rey not to have too many windows open at one time. I personally enjoy pushing my computer as far as I can make it go before this happens.

I was actually having big time problems with this as well. I use Netscape as my browser (old habits die hard) I upgraded from Navigator 3.0 to Communicator 4.51. This has made a BIG difference.

Also running disk defragmenter is good advice. I installed Norton SystemWorks & it reminds me when it's time to do this (It's embarrassing, but I do need to be reminded sometimes) It also includes CrashGuard which will let you know if you are about to freeze up & give you the option to save or restart returning to the exact place you left off. This has only happened once or twice, but it sure was nice to have. SystemWorks takes up alot of space but for my needs it is worth it. Saves me from many hassles.

Oh yah, the cache advice was great as well. Every little bit helps.

Sysman - when I ordered the PC back in Nov, I could not get any of the vendors to configure the multimedia machine with NT - they indicated problems with drives for the toys - video email, tv, etc. As far as NT - have it at work, in our enviorn it is very stable but man is it a pig we've gotten by with 32mg but require at least 64 for performance reasons and for anything coming in the door we're requiring 128.

Lon: There IS such a thing as a lemon. If it is new and if you don't like to tinker and you can take it back to the retailer (if it was a retailer), do so. (In any case, do not buy mail order unless you like to tinker.) If it's an NEC or Packard Bell, run don't walk, back to the retailer.

Personally I have had much more problems with name brands than with locally built clones.

Some computers (a minority) have hardware problems that all the software tweaking and driver-upgrading in the world won't fix. It is often impossible to tell the difference, except the hard way.

Now that I've tweaked Win95a to working, it is solid as a rock and never crashes (once every 6 months?). I hate the 2G partition limit, but I know if I move my programs to Win98 it'll be a good 100 hours out of my life.

we have been having problems also. in our case, we have both windows 95 and nt 4 and using netscape communicator 4.5. the problem has been the new netscape, which is a piece of junk. everyone i know who has it has problems. it caused a problem with 95 but not nt. too bad, as i prefer netscape to ie.

I too get these all the time. Seems I have an old system, very old....I have little disc space left available and am to cheap to upgrade till after 2000. My teen downloaded a virus last week while in a chat room. Now tell me how much sense he had to download a happy face which said "CONFLICT?" Hubby had to reinsert original disc, not enough space left to reload, whata nightmare....warn your children about NOT downloading stuff. I am not saying that is what your problem might be, but a heads up for us parents with curious children.
